[...] Crowded is an altogether heavier affair, with an A side electronically tweaked by Russell Haswell. But this is nothing like the psychoacoustic bombardment you often get from a Haswell collaboration. Instead it's a mesmerizing piece with what sounds a little like homemade Shepard tones perpetually descending into the depths.
Drumm works like these blow the usual categories of tough versus tender music out of the water. Like his lullaby piece Imperial Horizon, these are noise puzzles to lose yourself in, soundtracks to an inner journey. Like the battered cap and the big hoodie, it's more about making you comfortable than acting the tough guy.

The latest emission from one of my favourite sound operators comes courtesy of Poland's increasingly great Bocian label. This fine slab of wax contains two rather splendid tracks recorded between 2009-20012. The first of which 'Repetative Algae' utilizes source material recorded in 2007. What that source material was is undisclosed but the results sound like a large steel ball bearing rolling around inside a cement mixer creating a sort of disorientating hypnotic, churning rhythm over which Drumm lays down some colossal drones, weird clicks and scrapes and lots of gravelly grainy sounds. It also sounds a bit like a giant taking a massive slash into a big metal urinal adorned with contact mics. It's got a super unnerving and creepy edge to it. Exactly what you don't want to hear right before a panic attack. There are some high pitched frequencies too that sound like demented birds squawking about as the cement mixer changes gear and slows right down creating huge gurgling sounds that sound like a ....... więcej
