Fat Cat info:
Split Series 1-8 is the first of three CD sets that FatCat will release to compile cuts from their acclaimed vinyl-only series of split singles - an ongoing project designed to showcase developments in the converging electronic paths of improv, techno, hip-hop and post-rock. This selection, edited by Obsessive Eye's Dave Howell, includes ear-slicing distorted constructions from James Plotkin and Janek Schaefer, digital scuttling insect swarms courtesy of Team Doyobi and superb excursions into leftfield break-beat oddness from Ad Vanz and Gescom. Elsewhere Skint Record's Req supplies a slumbering mass of sequenced fog, pulses and glitches, while Third Eye Foundations propulsive "There's No End In Sight" offers a foot-tapping highpoint. Also present is Merzbow's fifteen-minute "Ab Hunter", which failed to make it on to the vinyl releases as no shellac was found which could handle its wildly swinging top-end and nauseous swollen bass. Though sporadically extreme and unlistenable, Split Series 1-8 is an essential post-rock document. "The Rough Guide Rock"
