Listen to the music of Joe Morris and one is immediately struck by a few things. First, there is his sense of rhythmic and melodic articulation; a sense of phrasing brimming with potent energy and focused resolve. Then there is an uncanny ability to balance freedom and groove. Finally, there is his ability to pull it all together in structures that bring out particularly inspired playing by his collaborators. All of this is grounded in a deepseated knowledge of the tradition; not boundary - constrained conventions that all too often pass for tradition. Instead, Morris has the in - sightful ability to pull at will from the pulse of African string music, Armstrong's antiphony, the rooted soul of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Bop's lithe angular flow, Ellington's sense of graceful swing, right up through the inversions and refractions of Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, Jimmy Lyons, or Henry Threadgill (to name just a few of the masters that Morris discusses with eloquent passion.)
Morris draws on all of this for the music on this recording. Over the course of the last three decades, he has made an auspicious mark as a leader, helming sessions with his instantly identifiable guitar. Here, he shows equal acumen leading a quartet as a bass player, an instrument he has been increasingly focusing attention on. Morris explains his strategy for the recording. "I wanted this group to work as a playful folk-like setting. Four guys playing simple but unique things and having a lot of room to stretch."
The choice of reeds, brass, bass and drums opens up the harmonic foundation of the pieces to focus on the tensile dynamism ingrained within the tunes. Guiding the session from the bass, Morris and crew dive in with a commanding sense of open pulse and melodic construction. "...Lider zespołu jest w Diapazonie znany i jak sądzę lubiany, więc nie będę przybliżał jego postaci. Niespodzianką, ale może niezbyt wielką, jest to, iż Joe Morris tym razem nie gra na swoim koronnym instrumencie, jakim jest gitara, lecz na kontrabasie.
