“At the Beach – Music for Voice and Electric Bass” We enjoy the interplay of our two musical positions tremendously. I really feel this has to do with a “storytelling” or an “intuition for the narrative” that we both have. And I mean it even in the most general, abstract sense says David Moss. T ogether with Hannes Strobl, they’ve found rhythmic and even philosophic connection that made the duo work, as a natural extension of their earlier project, the band Denseland, created with Hanno Leichtmann. I was working on a collection of pieces for electric bass, where I wanted to explore some of the different musical and sonic possibilities of the instrument, that usually can't be heard very often says Hannes Strobl.
- When Hannes told me he had developed a number of solo bass pieces and songframeworks that might be interesting for my voice, we easily and fruitfully created this album - explains David.
“At the Beach – Music for Voice and Electric Bass” is a story told in music. It starts with the specific sound of the electric bass, an
instrument played mostly in pop, rock or jazz, but rarely found in contemporary, experimental music.
Most of the time the instrument is played in a very traditional way, where it has to fulfill its function within the arrangement.
So the player is not only playing on the instrument but the instrument is also playing on him, the tradition of the instrument. David broke with that kind of tradition as a singer and found his own unique way to use his voice, so I felt a strong connection with him right away says Hannes Strobl. Strobl created a special way of playing the electric bass and combines his two instruments – one of them an electric upright bass –

“At the Beach – Music for Voice and Electric Bass” to pierwsza płyta nagrana przez Davida Mossa i Hannesa Strobla w duecie, jednocześnie jest to album stanowiący naturalną kontynuację muzycznego dialogu, jaki obydwaj artyści prowadzą ze sobą od lat.
- Jestem przekonany, że nasza relacja ma związek ze szczególnym rodzajem intuicji narratora, talentem opowiadacza historii w tym najbardziej abstrakcyjnym kontekście - mówi David Moss.

Fundamentem jest brzmienie basu, od niego zaczyna się snucie opowieści, ono też leży u fundamentu całej konstrukcji dźwiękowej na najnowszym albumie.
Gdyby nie pierwsze szkice, które Hannes Strobl zdecydował się przedstawić Davidowi Mossowi jeszcze w czasie, gdy wraz z Hanno Leichtmanem grali w
Denseland, ta płyta najpewniej nie powstałaby. Jak wyjasnia sam Strobl, punktem wyjścia jest fascynacja możliwościami stwarzanymi przez brzmienie gitary basowej, a także pewna forma walki ze stereotypem. Oto bowiem instrument przez lata wykorzystywany w konkretny sposób w utworach popowych, rockowych, czy jazzowych, zostaje wiodącym instrumentem w kompozycjach z obszaru muzyki elektroaktustycznej. Co ciekawe album “At the Beach – Music for Voice and Electric Bass” powstał w całości podczas improwizowanych sesji nagraniowych. Gdy Hannes przygotował i odtworzył mi swoje basowe kompozycje, słowa same przychodziły mi do głowy, następnie zaś niemal natychmiastowo rejestrowaliśmy całość. Nigdy
nie słuchałem utworów przed nagrywaniem, po prostu wskakiwałem w “słowa” Hannesa ze swoim głosem mówi David Moss. Powstałe w ten sposób oscylujące
między ulotnością a niepokojem nieśpiesznie narastające dźwięki zderzone zostały z wokalem, każda z kompozycji zaś składa się na spójną historię.
