Like Axel Dörner in Germany and Ernesto Rodrigues in Portugal, among others, Swedish alto (and sometimes baritone) saxophonist Martin Küchen spans the artificial divisions imposed between the 'new' and the 'old' improvising schools. His radical extended techniques, such as in the sonic use of saliva, are fundamental for the abstract, textural constructions on his solo album 'Homo Sacer.' Although these techniques address sound itself rather than music as conventionally considered, Küchen is first of all a free jazz player. Küchen the free jazz artist is in fact what we find on 'Every Woman is a Tree.' It is free jazz with a post-bop twist, profiting from contributions from some of the most interesting musicians on the Scandinavian scene: Magnus Broo (trumpet), Mats Äleklint (trombone), Mattias Stahl (vibraphone), Johan Berthling (contrabass, and yes, from the experimental pop group Tape), and Kjell Nordeson (drums). Although this recording is more 'thought out' and structured, it's still organic and is even visceral, as the subject of this record - war - requires. There is, though, also similarities to be found between the music on 'Every Woman is a Tree' and 'Homo Sacer': the obvious melodic material, the repetitive use of rythmic material, a helplessly emotional approach to both the sound itself and to the 'music' ...all this you can find on both CDs, although they initially audible 'looks' very different from each other... Martin Küchen is profoundly political, with strong convictions about such topics as the Iraq invasion and occupation, American foreign policy, Israel, racism, and immigration. This music reflects that commitment.

Absolutnie rewelacyjna płyta utwierdzająca mnie jedynie w przekonaniu, że wszelkie plebiscyty na płytę roku są bez sensu. Gdybym ją znał w roku 2008, to ani chybi byłaby ona jednym z moich absolutnie pewnych typów do płyty roku. Nie znałem. Znam dzisiaj. Jest rok 2010, w dodatku kończący się. Czy coś to dla tej płyty zmienia? Nic. Jedynie można, mając tę dwuletnią perspektywę, stwierdzić, że ani na jotę, muzyka tu zawarta nie zestarzała się.

Sprawcami całego "zamieszania" jest szóstka skandynawów, spośród których polskiej publiczności, najbardziej znanym może być Magnus Broo, albowiem w naszym kraju bywał. Czy pozostali - tego już nie pomnę. Szóstka owa ukryła się pod Aniołami z iście anielską - jak na moje uszy - muzyką. Być może to nie jest istotne, bo etykietek nie lubimy (ponoć, ponoć w dobrym tonie tak twierdzić ;)), niemniej jednak w pewien sposób ułatwiają one życie, a w zasadzie komunikację, być może zatem nie jest to istotne, ale zaprezentowaną tu muzykę, prawdopodobnie wielu ze słuchaczy odbierać będzie jako free jazz.

Niech i tak będzie. Grunt, że w muzyce tej, pomimo wielu elementów ją strukturyzujących jest otwartość i swoboda. Free? Jeśli tak, to to, które za swego ojca chrzestnego ma Ornette Colemana, a nie Evana Parkera. Są tu zatem i melodie (choć trudno by mi było pewnie je zanucić), skądinąd bardzo piękne, co tym bardziej do tradycji twórcy Lenely Woman muzykę tę zbliża. Są też wspaniałe sola, głównie dęciaków: Magnusa Broo, Martina Küchena oraz Matsa Äleklinta. Trąbka, saksofon i puzon. Zestaw zupełnie wystarczający jak na moje uszy i bodaj jeden z najlepszych we współbrzmieniu. Jednakże, choć owych dęciaków mnóstwo, charakter brzmieniu tego zespołu nadaje wibrafonista - Mattias Stahl. To dzięki niemu muzyka stała się ulotna, niemal zwiewna, pomimo absolutnej mocy kreowanej przez pozostały kwintet (dla porządku, skład uzupełnia sekcja Johan Berthling - kontabas i Kjell Nordeson - perkusja; sekcja mocna, o kolorycie n.......
