Every solo album with a horn is a difficult task, and that’s the reason why so few are released on record or played on the stage. No-one else is there to give you cues, to challenge you: your creativity and your technical skills are the only resources available. Or so it seems, because in a solo situation you’re dueling with two presences: one, of course, is the audience, and as Derek Bailey used to say, a solo is a duo with the people who listens, but the other is even more determinant, the space around you, sometimes acting very much like there’s another musician around. “All the Rivers – Live at Panteao Nacional” is a solo indeed, but in this recording trumpeter Susana Santos Silva is improvising with the architecture of the National Pantheon / Santa Engrácia’s Church in Lisbon, namely with its marble acoustics and huge reverberation – each phrasing, each texture is molded by the building, adding other elements to the original sound of the trumpet. Santos Silva works with her knowledge of the instrument and its possibilities, reacting to the transformations resulting from the harmonic action of the space. She’s rediscovering the exploratory, experimental side of free improvisation, somewhat lost during decades of gradually fixed procedures.

Jeszcze nie ostygłem po wielokrotnej lukturze znakomitej płyty "Basement Sessions Vol.4 (The Bali Tapes)" kwartetu Aalberg, Kullhammar, Zetterber & Santos Silva, a w moje ręce wpadł właśnie solowy album portugalskiej trębaczki Susany Santos Silva, cichej bohaterki wspomnianej płyty. "All The Rivers - Live At Panteao Nacional", wydany tak jak poprzedni przez Clean Feed, wydawcę prawie wszystkich dotychczasowych jej płyt.

Z jednej strony można słuchać tej płyty jako kontynuacji "Basement Sessions Vol.4 (The Bali Tapes)", bo tak jak na taśmach z Bali nie mamy tutaj do czynienia z muzyką awangardową, skądże. O ile tam tropiliśmy ścieżki tradycyjnej muzyki dalekiego wschodu, od Indonezji po Japonię, trzeba powiedzieć, że w bardzo czułym ujęciu. Tak tutaj uczestniczymy w intymnym spektaklu, który jest swoistą medytacją nad dźwiękiem trąbki, czasami dyskretnie modulowanej, innym razem suchej, czasami emocjonalnej, częściej generującej spokojną, płynną narrację. Susana nigdzie się nie spieszy, gra długimi frazami, które przyklejają się do słuchacza i nie puszczają.

Wiele płyt na solowe instrumenty to przegadane czytanki, bywają też nagrania urywane w pół dźwięku, niedokończone. Wiele z nich w ogóle nie powinno ujrzeć światła dziennego. Tutaj jednak, podczas Rescaldo Festival w Lizbonie wszystko zabrzmiało po mistrzowsku, choć nie podejrzewam, żeby Susana zawaracała sobie głowę jakimkolwiek mistrzostwem, za którym pędzą różne Wyntony Marsalisy, Terenc'e Blanchardy, Nicholasy Paytony...
Warto skorzystać z zaproszenia do intymnego, przebogatego świata wyobraźni Susany Santos Silvy, trębaczki znakomitej!
