Despite the slavish desire of many improvising musicians in recent times to follow Ezra Pound's famous dictum "make it new" by consciously avoiding traditional musical parameters and time - honoured rise and fall structures, musicians instinctively make their way towards and away from moments of climax and resolution. It's as natural as breathing in and out, waking up in the morning and falling asleep at the end of the day. One of the most impressive things about Lighton - a 30 minute live recording from last year's Musica Genera festival in Szczecin, Poland - is its utterly natural sense of flow and structure. It documents the first - and hopefully not last - meeting of percussionist Tony Buck, pianist Cor Fuhler and alto saxophonist and Musica Genera co-founder Anna Zaradny, who also provided the artwork for this release.
Unlike many contemporary Improv saxsophonists who seem to prefer breathy pitchless flutters and hisses to recognisable notes, Zaradny reveals a genuine fondness for both melodic line and interval, notably in her fragile multiphonics. She's found similarly openminded playing partners in Buck and Fuhler, whose convincing use of piano prepararations and occasional Feldman-esque minor ninths and major sevenths at times recall John Tilbury. If the music calls for fleeting excursions into semi- regular pulse from Buck's ride cymbal and toms or recognisable tonal centres from Fuhler and Zaradny, so be it.
The ear shows the way, the fingers follow, and that's as it should be.
