Following on from November1s 'Comeback' 12inch, also released on Wonder, the perfect reintroduction The Modernist has always been more than just techno, he loves classic pop harmonies, Roddy Frame or Edwyn Collins guitar, the grand gestures of a Martyn Fry or a Kevin Rowland. Whether in his Bionaut guise, as Trinkwasser or together with Mike Ink, echoes of New Order, Pet Shop Boys and The Smiths filter through trance scapes, from techno to homely songwriting. Then came the inevitable team up with Antonelli Electr. PopUp. Which says it all really, Pop attitude. Back to The Modernist, first album release since The Modernist Explosion on Matador in 2000. Kangmei kicks off in a neon-folk style and finishes up with rockin1funk. In between you1ll find classic Cologne grooves, melody, TECHNO with guitars, a high wire above kitsch waters and high art. The prolific Joerg Burger (Kangmei is his 13th album in total) has been a recording artist since 1990, operating as (amongst others) Biosphere, Burger Industries, The Bionaut, releasing on labels small and large, from Structure to Harvest. The Wonder label in Hamburg is The Modernist1s latest and hopefully greatest home. With a fanbase spreading across the electronic scene from Frankfurt to New York City, and a list of collaborators (Ink, Air Liquide, Cristian Vogel etc) which reads like a who1s who of this particular artform, Burger remains at the forefront of dance music, or as Tim Barr put it in the Penguin Books Rough Guide to Techno: 'merging synth pop melodies, jazz chord voices and druggy techno grooves into a delirious, technicolour confection'.
