Brilliant, ESSENTIAL jazz album!

This is a reissue of the US edition of the soundtrack to Louie Malle's classic Nouvelle Vague existentialist film noir 'Ascenseur Pour L'echafaud' (released as 'Frantic' in the US) plus bonus tracks!

Recorded in Paris with a French pick-up band in a dark room in front of a projection of the film, the soundtrack was improvised live to the images, and the result is simply spellbinding. Comparable in tone to the haunting, tranquil tracks from his masterpiece 'Kind of Blue' album, this soundtrack is a true classic and easily ranks among the best jazz albums of all time.

"An absolutely fascinating release. The French group is completely dominated by Miles, though Wilen manages to play very well in his brief solos and Klook's brushes are delightful. But it is Miles one remembers from these tracks; he conveys the concentrated beauty and stark drama of, say, Billie Holiday. His sadness is devastating here, just as his lyricism is exquisite and the pain of his beauty almost insupportable. Some of the very best, if not the best, Miles solos are contained on the Elevator side of the LP." Ralph J. However, the novelty of films such as Louis Malle's Ascenseur pour l'echafaud was the absolute integration of jazz music to a feature film whose story had nothing to do with jazz or even with music itself: the utilization of jazz music to emphasize the dramatic action and develop/support the film's climax. Miles Davis' improvisations fit the dark atmosphere of the film perfectly and contributed greatly to underline the many subtleties of the story and the internal thoughts of its characters. "...Przez blisko 50 lat Miles Davis był jedną z najważniejszych osobowości świata jazzu. I jest nadal! Pozostała nam po nim nie tylko wspaniałą muzyka, ale też olbrzymia grupa muzyków, którzy do dziś legitymują się współpracą z królem trąbki.
Jazz Track to ścieżka dźwiękowa do filmu "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud" ("Windą na szafot") Louisa Malle'a, którą Miles napisał w 1957 r., pracując ze swym francuskim kwartetem. Reżysera poznał za pośrednictwem popularnej piosenkarki i aktorki Juliette Gréco.
"To było genialne doświadczenie, bo nigdy wcześniej nie komponowałem muzyki filmowej. Obejrzałem roboczą wersję filmu i zacząłem notować pomysły. Ponieważ rzecz dotyczyła morderstwa, a historia miała mieć suspens, wykorzystałem stary, bardzo posępny i mroczny gmach, gdzie kazałem muzykom grać. Zgodnie z moimi przypuszczeniami dodało to właściwej atmosfery" - wspominał później Miles.
Nagranie ukazało się na winylowej płycie zatytułowanej "Jazz Track", a wydawca dodał tam jeszcze sesję Davisa z "Green Dolphin Street". W zespole grali z nim wtedy giganci jazzu: Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers i wielki John Coltrane.
