For approximately 18 months (from the fall of 1961 to June 1963), Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon co-led a group that varied in size between a quartet, quintet and sextet, depending on the gig. They mostly played coffee houses and small theaters in Greenwich Village, and traveled to Scandinavia in July 1962 for a series of concerts at the socialist-leaning First International Youth Festival in Helsinki. Back in the United States, they were featured in a regular series of radio performances on New York's WBAI. However, unless any unknown radio broadcast or live European performance surfaces, their only recorded works together consist of the studio quartet album made for Savoy in October 1962. It is presented here on CD for the first time ever. As a bonus to this interesting album, we have added Archie Shepp's only other recording session for the Savoy label, including Don Cherry on one track, and Bill Dixon's second recording session, in a septet format.

Dwie płyty winylowe (ale trzy sesje!) po raz pierwszy ukazują się łącznie na płycie kompaktowej. Przy czym kwartet wspomniany w tytule gra tylko w czterech pierwszych utworach. Kolejne cztery to sesja Arcjie Sheppa i The New York Contemporary Five [Don Cherry, Ted Curson, John Tchicai, Ronnie Boykins i Sunny Murray], natomiast siedem zamykających płytę utworów Bill Dixon Septet (ale bez Archie Sheppa). Nagranie te dokumentują więc nie tylko współpracę obu liderów ale również autorskie projekty obu muzyków. Muzyka ich wykazuje pewne podobieństwa - w początkowym okresie swojej działalności zarówno Dixon jak i Shepp bardzo chętnie wykorzystywali skoki interwałowe. Sprawia to wrażenie jakby ich muzyka nieco wychodziła poza harmonię - chociaż nie ma tu ani odrobiny eksperymentów których już wtedy zachwycał Ornette Coleman. Shepp jako saksofonista do spotkania i pierwszych nagrań z Coltranem był muzykiem stricte mainstreamowym, mocno odwołującym się do bluesowej tradycji chociaż sposób frazowanie i artykulacji już na tym wczesnym nagraniu jest w pełni ukształtowany. Nixon zadziwia swobodą muzycznej wypowiedzi i niezwykłym zmysłem kształtowania przestrzeni dźwięku. Znakomita płyta, w dodatku - co w tej wytwórni nie tak częste - równie znakomicie brzmiąca. Polecam
