Things Have Got To Change is Marty Ehrlich's dynamic new CD featuring his Rites Quartet. Inspired by the sound of Julius Hemphill's landmark recording "Dogon A.D.", Ehrlich presents five new compositions, ranging from the urgent to the reflective in mood. Joined by long time musical colleagues James Zollar on trumpet, Erik Friedlander on cello, and Pheeroan AkLaff on drums, Things Have Got to Change moves from dance rhythms into elegiac chorales, tied together by Ehrlich's distinctive voice on alto sax. Two previously unrecorded compositions by Julius Hemphill's are brought to light by the Rites Quartet on this CD, as well as a rocking version of his signature work Dogon A.D. The CD's title points both inward and outward, to the task of keeping the past alive in the present, and as one of Ehrlich's pieces "Song For Tomorrow" expresses, keeping our sights forward.

[. . .] The music itself is hard to describe: it's post-modern jazz, carefully composed and arranged, with lots of room for powerful and emotional improvisations, and possibilities to venture into more free and avant-garde areas, a whole range of jazz approaches that can even be present on one and the same track ("Song For Tomorrow"). The music is joyful as on the swinging "Dung", dark and sad as on "From Strength To Strength", deeply melancholy and contemplative on "Some Kind Of Prayer", only to end with one of the most magnificent pieces of music ever written, Julius Hemphill's "Dogon A.D.",* the wonderfully hypnotic composition that is driven by the repetitive arco cello tones, over the mad 11/8 rhythm, with the horns finding their theme around and against the pulse. True, it is not the original, and even trying to cover it takes courage, but the performance is of a really top-notch level. As is the entire album actually. Four stellar musicians making great music. What a joy! [. . .]

Marty Ehrlich przez lata przyzwyczaił nas do niekonwencjonalnych składów, wystarczy wymienić grupę The Dark Woods Ensemble, gdzie klarnet występuje wraz z największymi instrumentami smyczkowymi: wiolonczelą i kontrabasem lub Marty Ehrlich's Traveler's Tale na dwa saksofony, akustyczną gitarę basową i perkusję, w końcu Julius Hemphill Septet złożony z samych saksofonistów.
Jego nowy zespół Marty Ehrlich Rites Quartet wydaje się być kontynuacją The Dark Woods Ensemble w oczywiście odmienionym skladzie z Jamesem Zollarem na trąbce, Pheeroanem Aklaffem na perkusji i występującym w The Dark Woods Ensemble Erikiem Friedlanderem na wiolonczeli.
'Things Have Got To Change' w wyraźny sposób odwołuje się do brzmienia epokowego nagrania Juliusa Hemphilla 'Dogon A.D' [Abdul Wadud: cello, Philip Wilson: drums, Julius Hemphill: sax, Baikida Carroll: trumpet].
Pięć kompozycji Erlicha uzupełnione o trzy autorstwa Hemphilla dają wielką satysfakcję zarówno tym, którzy cenili sobie kameralistyczno-jazzowy urok The Dark Woods Ensemble jak i tych, dla których istotą nagrań szczególnie ukochanego przez Ehrlicha - Juliusa Hemphilla jest ów hipnotyczno-energetyczny afro-amerykański nastrój, któremu nie sposób nie ulec.
