This trio is on a quest - in this case, to recover the core values of collective improvisation. They are not warriors but rather crusaders for freedom, and they understand that peace and freedom go hand in hand. "Free" improvisation or what is known as experimental music has increasingly turned into a relentless attack on the senses, while "jazz" has elevated individual displays of virtuosity. The soloist has become paramount, which is why we are more likely to hear an audience member shout, "That cat can play!" rather than to hear someone exhort, "That cat can listen!"
Book of Three brings back the art of listening, the art of silence, the art of collective improvisation, the art of slowing down. These three artists possess a musical rapport that cannot be composed. It is improvisation in its purist form - a process of listening and responding in order to produce a multilayered yet singular voice. In place of ever-thickening density, the trio prefers long, measured, shapely notes, drawn from the entire range of their instruments. Whether it's Hébert bowing in the high register (or under the bridge); Bynum pushing air rather than vibration through his horn, or Cleaver milking every rim, drum head, or the length and breadth of each cymbal, nothing is wasted.


Ce trio est en recherche - dans ce cas, pour retrouver les valeurs fondamentales de l'improvisation collective. Ce ne sont pas des guerriers, mais plutôt des croisés de la liberté, et qui comprennent que paix et liberté vont de pair. L'improvisation libre ou la musique expérimentale s'est de plus en plus transformée en une attaque sans relâche des sens, tandis que le "jazz" a mis en valeur la virtuosité individuelle. Le soliste est généralement mis en avant, c'est pourquoi nous entendons souvent l'auditoire dire, "quel solo !" plutôt que de saluer le niveau d'écoute entre les musiciens.

"..."Book of Three" czyli "Księga trzech" jest dosyć swobodną i nieskrępowaną muzyczną konwersacją prowadzoną przed trójkę godnych siebie partnerów: Taylor Ho Bynum pojawia się od lat w znakomitych (prowadzi także własne projekty), ale prawdziwe uznanie zdobył jako asystent Anthony'ego Braztona w jego większy składach i partner w małych (duet, tria i kwartety). John Hebert to kontrabasista tyleż znany i uznany przez krytyków i muzyków, co nieznany szerszej publiczności. Członek tria Joe Fiedlera oraz składów Steve'a Lehmana w tym dał się poznać także jako lider własnego tria - nagrana dla portugalskiego Clean Feedu płyta "Spiritual Lover" doczekała się świetnych recenzji w branżowych pismach. Geralda Cleavera przedstawiać miłośnikom jazzu chyba nie trzeba - partner Davida S.Ware'a, Matthew Shippa, Williama Parkera, Charlesa Gayle'a, Craiga Taborna, Daniela Levina czy Joe McPhee i Wadady Leo Smitha jest od lat jednym z najbardziej cenionych perkusistów świata. Ci trzej muzycy jednoczą siły i wiodą na płycie zupełnie swobodną narrację - niezskrępowaną rytmem, linią melodyczną czy harmonią. Niespieszną bowiem dźwięk często wymaga wybrzmienia, akcentu. Nie ma znaczenia czy jest to szmer czy kaskada - każda nuta czy pauza jest tutaj ważna i dla każdego dźwięku jest tutaj miejsce. Nie oznacza to jednak, iż muzyka ma charakter free improwu - jest tu miejsce na zdecydowanie jazzowe frazy, ale zawsze są one "otwarte", są kreatywnym spojrzeniem, cały czas redefiniowanym i odkrywanym jakby na nowo.
