Editor's info:
Instrumentation was always important to Gerry Mulligan (1927-1996), who was one of the first to exclude the piano from the jazz rhythm section (although he played it sometimes). Mulligan continually experimented with new formats for his music, which was perhaps best exemplified by his work with his Concert Jazz Band. The initial LP by the Concert Jazz Band reissued here (tracks 1-8) was recorded during three sessions. The first one, on May 21, 1960, appears to be the first session ever by the band, and produced just one title: "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'", which was originally issued divided into two parts on a 45 rpm single (it is quite likely that more titles were attempted during this date but nothing else has survived). All seven remaining tracks from the album were recorded on two nearly consecutive dates on July 25 & 27, 1960. However, three further sessions took place between the May and July dates, on June 1-3, 1960. According to discographies, eleven titles were tried then, although only four survive: "Barbara's Theme", "I Know, Don't Know How", and earlier versions of two of the LP's titles: "Out of This World" and "Sweet and Slow". All four songs have been added here as a bonus. Soon after these studio sessions, Verve's producer Norman Granz took the band on tour to Europe. The three last bonus tracks of our CD were recorded in Milan during that tour (no other pieces from that concert seem to exist).
The complete original Gerry Mulligan LP The Concert Jazz Band (Verve V6-8388), the first album released by this extraordinary Mulligan big band formation. Featuring such names as Zoot Sims, Bob Brookmeyer, Conte Candoli, Gene Quill, Mel Lewis, and of course Mulligan himself. As a bonus, all surviving tunes from the band's second studio session (recorded in between the three sessions that made up the LP), as well as three tracks recorded live in Milan four months after completing the album.
