"I first became acquainted with Boduf Songs when I starting working at Southern. I remember being handed a bunch of new releases to familiarise myself with, The The Lion Devours The Sun was one of them and it blew me away. Soon after hearing that I bought the self-titled release, and knew that I had been exposed to something exceptional. Kranky describe Mat Sweet aka Boduf Songs as possessing alchemical powers based on his ability to take various musical instruments and transform their sound to create something deeply original, something that is not simply 'singer-songwriter' or 'folk'. It is the sonic detail enriching every song that I find most striking about Sweet's music. After releasing two astounding records, I wanted to hear more of what Boduf Songs had to offer and felt that offering the opportunity to record a Latitudes session would be a great way to stimulate Mat Sweet's idiosyncratic style.
The result is two outstanding tracks, the first one 'Please Extract My Teeth With Your Rustiest Pliers (For Redemptive)' sounds like it could have been used as the soundtrack to a 1970s horror film, with timely splashing cymbals, scratchy guitar sounds and deep thunderous drones. The second track 'That Angel Was Fucking Piss' is quintessential Boduf, with brooding vocals, the crisp plucking of the acoustic guitar and every detail of every chord transition captured. Both songs are rich in timbre, creating an intense atmosphere for the listener to be well and truly absorbed.
Prepare to be consumed by Boduf Songs."
