Composer, pianist, and bandleader Muhal Richard Abrams has been one of the quiet champions of the avant-garde underground since the 1960s. He churned out free jazz in various forms right through the turn of the century, always pushing at boundaries and expanding his range. While 2001's THE VISIBILITY OF THOUGHT found Abrams exploring contemporary classical territory, 2006's STREAMING is something of a return to form. Joined by fellow avant veterans George Lewis and Roscoe Mitchell, Abrams creates soundscapes on STREAMING that are startling, whimsical, and otherworldly. Though his roots are in the free jazz of the '60s, Abrams music never feels anything less than fresh and utterly contemporary.


The Wire (p.47) - "The gentle, ululating textures of 'Bound' feature subtle electronic effects....'Streaming', in refreshing contrast, is mostly a high-intensity free jazz squall."
Down Beat (p.62) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The five long-form improvisations here run the gamut from ethereal burbling to raucous, no-holds blowing."
