The songs on Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn are eerie and iridescent, composed and captured with mesmerising attention to detail, guided by the band's most intricate and intimate guitar passages to date. Many of the songs feature a newfound non-linearity in compositional structure that once again raises the DMST bar for imbuing instrumental rock with heartrending - yes, even hymnal - narrative ideas. More than any previous effort by the band, this is an album that yearns to be listened to as a whole, or at least in the triptychs defined by the 3-sided vinyl edition.

Trzy hymniczne cykle montrealiskich postrockowców prezentują ich jako brakujące ogniwo pomiędzy Tortoise, Gastr Del Sol a Godspeed You Black Emperor. Kogo elektryzuje taka fuzja, ten będzie w siódmym niebie. Ta szlachetnie surowa kameralistyka z undergroundu zgrabnie przenika się z folkowym liryzmem i jazzującym nerwem, ale też niekiedy rozrasta się z patosem symf rocka i choć to progrock w garażowej szacie, też potrafi nużąco przytłoczyć. Nie brak tu wprawdzie ciekawych kombinacji brzmieniowych – szczególnie płynących współbrzmień smyków i dęciaków - i wdzięcznej zwiewności, ale jak na czwarty album, nic nie jest w stanie zmienić wrażenia, iż mamy do czynienia zaledwie z solidnymi pogrobowcami. Tak więc: ładne, ale głównie dla fanów chicagowsko-montrealsko-islandzkich smętków.
