Normally, a jazz piano trio is like a pyramid, with the pianist at the pointing top and both bassist and drummer on the left and right sides of the bottom. Not in the case of Meteo, the project involving French Grand player Sophie Agnel and British rhythm destroyers John Edwards and Steve Noble: what they create is a circle. To be exact: a circle of fullness, not emptiness. The same fat circle with which composer Giacinto Scelsi represented sound. Outside of the logics patterned by Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau and Jason Moran, this pianodouble bass-drums combination has no hierarchies (everybody leads, everybody follows) and deals with the inner properties of sound itself, feeding from Scelsi’s example. Much of the time, Agnel plays standing, manipulating the interior of the piano with hands and objects. In the middle of the abstract noises coming from it we hear a particular succession of pure notes, the fragment of a melody. Inside all the rumble and thunder maintained by Edwards and Noble we recognize a steady pulsation. There’s no limits for what these three do: they’re atonal, microtonal and tonal in only few minutes. As the liner notes of the CD say, «they flirt with all genres, intensities and intensions»

Trio jazzowe zazwyczaj przypomina piramidę z pianistą na szczycie i sekcją poniżej. Jeśli taka struktura instrumentalistów państwu odpowiada, płyta "Meteo" wydana właśnie przez wielokrotnie nagradzaną w ostatnich latach oficynę Clean Feed nie jest dla was.

Zdecydowanie najbardziej znanymi członkami tria są Brytyjczycy - perkusista John Edwards i kontrabasista Steve Noble. Obaj są członkami London Improvisers Orchestra, współpracowali z gigantami improwizatorami jak Joe McPhee, Lol Coxhill, Alan Wilkinson czy Peter Brotzmann.

Francuska pianistka Sophie Agnel ma za sobą klasyczne wykształcenie, dość szybko porzuciła świat muzyki akademickiej na korzyść muzyki improwizowanej, tak jak inni muzycy z jej pokolenia (Stéphane Rives, Michel Doneda, Jean-Luc Guionnet) płynnie porusza się po wielu muzycznych polach jak współczesna kameralistyka, wolna improwizacja, preparowany fortepian, czy inne, polistylistyczne koncepcje muzyczne.

Płyta sygnowana nazwiskami trojga muzyków nie jest łatwa, choćby fakt, że zawiera ona wyłącznie jeden utwór ("Meteo" to zarejestrowana na żywo w 2012 na Festival Météo we francuskim Mulhouse forma) może dla niektórych słuchaczy być wystarczająca przeszkodą, jednak warto sięgnąć po ten wyjątkowy album, chociażby po to, aby dać sobie szansę, aby zrozumieć, że muzyka współczesna nie zna granic, strukturą kompozycji "Meteo" przypomina czasami prace włoskiego ekscentryka Giacinto Scelsi'ego, logika fortepianowej narracji natomiast przywodzi dokonania Billa Evansa, Keitha Jarretta czy Brada Mehldau'a. Ciągła pulsacja sekcji, to niszczącej wszystko, co spotka na swej drodze, to znajdując pojedyncze dźwięki, na nowo definiuje pojęcie "medytacyjna"...
