he Reluctantly Politicised Mr. James is the second album by Spin Marvel, a group that wowed critics on their debut self-titled album in 2005. Led by drummer Martin France, it features some of Europe’s most progressive improvisers and finest musicians and, with the addition of celebrated trumpeter Nils Peter Molvaer, marks a giant leap forward for the band and reflects some of the most exciting music currently bursting out of the European scene.

Loose Tubes in the 1980s, France has acquired plenty of A-list collaborators he can call on for Spin Marvel. Both the band's albums feature guitarist John Parricelli, bassist Tim Harries and percussionist/electronicist Terje Evensen, and trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer is added to the lineup on The Reluctantly Politicised Mr James.

Molvaer, firmly featured in his ambient-musing comfort zone, adds a marginally greater degree of melody to Spin Marvel's sophomore album, but the major difference between it and its predecessor lies in France's approach to rhythm itself. Gone, largely, are the thick waves of groove which periodically anchored Spin Marvel. Instead, France has focused more on free-time and rhythmic displacement—still approaching his kit with powerhouse energy, but eschewing the certainties of motor rhythms. He's a more than adequately inventive improviser to carry this off, and throughout the album's 36-minute playing time he is quite spellbindingly compelling.

France has been keen to emphasize the collaborative nature of Spin Marvel. He says that during the three year gestation of The Reluctantly Politicised Mr James, the mixes passed through the hands of all the musicians, in some cases several times. With a lineup of this stature, that's to be expected. But the considerable success of the album is very largely down to his own playing.

Martin France stara się raczej unikać bezpośredniego zaangażowania w melodię i harmonię, inspirując pozostałych członków bardziej do eksplorowania kolorystycznych możliwości poszczególnych instrumentów, Nils Petter Molvaer z kolei w swej twórczości łączy wiele gatunków muzycznych: jazz, fusion, ambient ... electronic. Mieszając je dąży do uzyskania możliwie głębokiej intensywności dźwięków, jego zdolność przemieszczania się pomiędzy gatunkami uczyniły z niego jednego z najbardziej cenionych i najchętniej zapraszanych do współpracy muzyków w Europie.

Formacje prowadzone przez perkusistów zazwyczaj wykazują pewne braki w warstwie melodycznej i struktury harmonicznej, skupiając się na bardzo ważnym elemencie jazzowgo języka, jakim bez wątpienia jest rytm (jednak nie jedynym ważnym). Na płycie ""The Reluctantly Politicised Mr. James" muzyka jest na tyle bogata, że nie odczuwamy niedostatku żadnego elementu, Martin France często ledwie sygnalizuje jakąś melodię i harmonię, niekoniecznie podając je jawnie, a członkowie zespołu olśniewająco je rozwijają.

Ci muzycy mają świeże spojrzenie na jazz, bo z ich perspektywy historia jazzu jest zupełnie inna niż np. z perspektywy amerykańskiej. Efektem jest muzyka zadziwiająca i inspirująca słuchacza.
