Gipsy Freedom is the sound of the band combining their influences more fluently than ever before. While past releases saw the band's avant folk dosed somewhat conservatively with the blues, free jazz, heavy psych and metal, Gipsy Freedom brings these other, non-folk elements to the fore and generally turns the volume up. You may hear the faint echoes of “Island Harvest” era Albert Ayler on one track, Iommi-derived riffage on the next, torch songs that sound torn straight from the Gershwin songbook on the next, and Can-style epic grooves on the next. Radically different, yet sustaining the band's high level of musical and thematic consistency, Gipsy Freedom is the sound of a band breaking out of the box and using the discarded shapes to construct strange new universes.

Gamelan, American Indian chants, and saxophone are just some of the elements in this eccentric collision of world music, folk, blues, and free jazz, the result of an ongoing collaboration between antifolk performer James Toth, aka Wooden Wand, and the Vanishing Voice collective.

Nowy ląd do odkrycia dla amatorów freak folku rozsławionego przez Animal Collective, Devedrę Banharta i CocoRosie. Wooden Wand to pseudonim Jamesa Totha, będącego siłą napędową niezliczonej ilość ulotnych zespołów i nagrań, które narastają od początku nowego wieku. Toth związany jest z freakową sceną nowojorską, ale jego muzyka zdaje się wywodzić z zapomnianej przez czas amerykańskiej głuszy. „Gypsy Freedom” daje niezły przegląd jego możliwości – są tu oniryczne folkowe ballady, rozciągające się do 20 minut psychodeliczne jamu i hipnotyczne rytuały zakorzenione na granicy muzyki plemiennej i awangardy. Łączy to wszystko nastrój tajemnicy, bliski niekiedy Current 93 czy Sun City Girls i kostropaty undergroundowy klimat. Całkiem miłe dziwactwo.

Intrygująca propozycja z pogranicza popu, world music i muzyki alternatywnej. Najlepiej brzmią w tym zestawie prosto i oryginalnie zaaranżowane piosenki, zaśpiewane przez Heidi Deihl, wokalistkę o frapującym głosie. Pomimo dość amatorskiego i minimalistycznego charakteru tej muzyki, albumu warto posłuchać – chociażby dla odświeżenia ucha, sfatygowanego oczywistą popową papką.
