During his trip back to Philadelphia, in Mid-1957, John Coltrane decided to accept Thelonious Monks offer to join the pianists band. They played at the Five Spot Caf, in New York, in a quartet format that also included bassist Ahmed Abdul Malik and drummer Shadow Wilson. Until the 1990s, a few studio tracks provided the only recorded evidence of Monk and Tranes musical collaborations. However, since then, there have been two marvellous discoveries. The most recent find is the fabulous Carnegie Hall concert presenting the original Monk-Trane-Malik-Wilson quartet on two nearly complete sets. The other, is the performance issued on this CD, which appears complete here for the time ever. Originally recorded by Tranes wife Naima on a portable (non professional) tape recorder, this material was recorded when Coltrane had already left Monk to return with Miles, on September 11, 1958, during the sole week in which Trane replaced his own replacement, tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin. In fact, Tranes son Ravi Coltrane preferred this performance over the Carnegie Hall show in spite of the sound deficiencies: For me, personally, Ravi declared, those Five Spot recordings with all the amateur sound and that, and the people talking and whatever are more precious. They reveal what the group did when they were in an expansive mood. They are stretching out, theyre deep into the music and the atmosphere is very strong. Also, youve got Roy Haynes on that, and he adds that rhythmic strength.
The new discoveries consist of live versions of Ruby my Dear and Nutty, never before released in any format.

Podczas powrotu do Filadelfii, w połowie 1957 roku, John Coltrane zdecydował się przyjąć propozycję Theloniousa Monka, aby dołączyć do jego zespołu. Koncertu tego składu w Five Spot Cafe w Nowym Jorku, w którym znalazł się również basista Ahmed Abdul Malik oraz perkusista Shadow Wilson przeszły do legendy jazzu.

Aż do lat 90-tych, zaledwie kilka studyjnych utworów świadczyło o współpracy Monka z Tranem. Od tego czasu na szczęście zdarzyły się dwa niezwykłe odkrycia. Pierwsze to wspaniały koncert z Carnegie Hall 29 listopada 1957 roku odkryty w Bibliotece Kongresu przez Larry’ego Applebauma, który został wydany w ubiegłym roku przez wytwórnię Blue Note, obsypany wieloma nagrodami, gdzie wystąpił kwartet w składzie: Monk – Coltrane – Malik – Wilson w dwóch, niestety niepełnych setach.

Drugie odkrycie to koncert z tej płyty, na szczęście zachowany w całości. Oryginalnie nagrany został przez żonę Coltrane’a Naimę na przenośnym, zupełnie nieprofesjonalnym magnetofonie. Materiał został nagrany, gdy Coltrane właściwie opuścił już Monka i wrócił do grania z Milesem Davisem, we wrześniu, 11go, 1958 roku, gdy na cały tydzień zastąpił swojego następcę Johnny Griffina.



Właściwie ten koncert jest zdaniem syna Trane’a - Ravi’ego Contrane’a lepszy od tego w Carnegie Hall, mimo braków w jakości dźwięku.
