Per Bloland studied at Stanford with Brian Ferneyhough and Mark Applebaum, has worked at IRCAM and Oberlin, and currently teaches at Miami University. His innovative sound world brilliantly blends custom built electronics with instrumental textures to create unique soundscapes unlike anything you’ve heard before. His work has been performed world wide to great acclaim and Tzadik is proud to present his first full CD release. Bloland’s lushly caustic music is at its most original and satisfying when it involves electronics, as in this disc’s thumping, crunchy opening track, “Solis–EA.” Solemn and ecstatic, the piece twice seems to have exhausted itself before heaving back into action with the slouchy power of a wave. In “Wood Machine Music,” a string quartet, clarinet, percussion and electronics create a ripping, roaring soundscape, like the middle of an earthquake; more reticent is the moody, even noir–ish “Of Dust and Sand,” for alto saxophone and a piano whose strings are vibrated by electromagnets. Two acoustic pieces, “A Drift of Swine” and “…walk now and then into the breath that blows coldly past…,” are twitchily detailed but feel less unique than Bloland’s electronic grandeur.

Per Bloland studiował w Stanford University wraz z Brianem Ferneyhough'iem oraz Markiem Applebaumem, pracował w IRCAM i Oberlin, a obecnie wykłada na Uniwersytecie w Miami. Jest laureatem wielu prestiżowych nagród, jak IRCAM, ICMA, SEAMUS/ASCAP, Digital Art Awards of Tokyo, the Martirano Competition, ISCM, the Eastman Computer Music Center, SCI/ASCAP, the Dal Niente Composer Competition, Taukay Edizioni Musicali, and the Accademia Musicale Pescarese.
