Little by little (we would prefer otherwise, but that’s how things go), all that the Canadian scene has to offer comes to light. Drummer and composer Nick Fraser is a fundamental figure of the progressive jazz circuit established in Toronto, due to his «feeling for economical gestures and innate sense of form», as critic Mark Miller wrote. And indeed, he’s out in the open: after playing with the likes of Anthony Braxton, Dave Liebman, Marilyn Crispell and David Binney, in this new opus he has the company of two other notable musicians with international reputations: Tony Malaby and Kris Davis. They enable him to give some groove to the music (wrong: lots of it!) and to be a colorist whenever needed, going to avant-garde land without losing sight of the jazz tradition. If you’ve already heard him with the bands Drumheller, Ugly Beauties, Peripheral Vision and Titanium Riot, “Too Many Continents” is something else. Between Malaby’s tenor sax harshness and Davis’ refined piano constructions, Fraser has enough room to surprise us. And he does. They all do, over and over and over.

“Too Many Continents” expands on my interest in geography, in the world around us, in language and space. In where people choose to make their lives and why.
I’ve known Kris and Tony for close to twenty years and have long felt a kinship with their music. The title piece is the first thing that we played together on the day we recorded and it offers a patient, rambling, and expansive improvisation to open the album.
“Recovered As Granted (Sketch 28/27)” is a reading of two pieces indebted to Edgar Varese. After stating the melody a few times, Tony plays a solo that really goes from zero to sixty (and back again). One thing that this album offers is (I believe) a more complete portrayal of Tony’s soprano saxophon.......

"Kanadyjska scena jazzowa nie jest bardzo znana w Europie. Oscar Peterson, Diane Krall... Ale z muzyki awangardowej? Kogóż prócz Jeana Deroma i muzykami z jego kręgu (i pokolenia) potrafi wymienić? A cóż, gdy mówić o młodszym jeszcze pokoleniu. A okazuje się, że coraz częściej zdobywają oni szlify u gwiazd amerykańskiego jazzu i sani stają się liderami wielce ciekawych projektów.

Tak jest właśnie z perkusistą Nickiem Fraser, jedną z podpór jazzowej sceny Toronto. Ten mający z dorobku współpracę z Anthonym Braxtonem, Williamem Parkerem, Jean-Luc'iem Pontym, Belą Fleckiem, Davem Liebmanem, Marilyn Crispell, Johnem Scofieldem, Wyntonem Marsalisem, Stevem Turrem czy David Binney muzyk, zaprosił do swojego autorskiego tria dwójkę luminarzy nowojorskiej sceny jazzowej - Tony'ego Malaby oraz Kris Davis.

Gdy powracam do tego nagrania, nie mogę oprzeć się wrażeniu, że Nick Fraser postrzega muzykę w kategoriach kolorystycznych. Gdzieś pomiędzy surowym liryzmem Malaby'ego, a wyrafinowaną pianistyką Davis zostawia w swych kompozycjach mnóstwo miejsca nie na granie rytmicznego podkładu, nie na wypełnienie przestrzeni skomplikowaną siecią rytmów, ale właśnie na bawienie się kolorem. Świetnym przykładem takiego podejścia jest choćby "I Needed It Yesterday", który to utwór, będący początkowo niemal cichutką balladą, stopniowo zagęszcza się i wyostrza, nabierając drapieżności, by w końcu rozpaść się w atonalnej partii Kris Davis. Ale gdy wsłuchać się w to dogłębnie, okaże się, że to nie Fraser pilnuje tu rytmu i energii - to raczej Davis. On się bawi i barwi ten utwór na coraz bardziej intensywne, mocne i zdecydowane kolory. I bynajmniej nie powraca do pierwotnej lirycznej formy.

Nie jest tom przy tym muzyka jednostajna i nużąca, nie jest awangardą dla awangardy, a zespół konsekwentnie odwołuję się do jazzowej tradycji i takiż korzeni. Cóż szkoły Flecka i Marsalisa zapomnieć się nie da - powiedzą złośliwi. Ale w gruncie rzeczy chodzi tu o.......
