About ‘The Day I Had Everything’:
If New Orleans was the first city of jazz; New York, the city that never sleeps: the home of bebop; Paris the city of 50s cool, then, arguably, that dynamic, cosmopolitan, constantly self-reinventing megacity London is the jazz burg of the 21st century.

To a visitor, London is overwhelming – a monster that consumes all in its path, grimey, overcrowded and intense. But it’s been said that London is a collection of villages and to the resident, subtle differences emerge between boroughs, within districts, even along streets. The yearly cycle brings its own complexity. The constant movement of people, wealth and cultures within the smoke create new patterns that are ever changing but are hugely influential on Londoners in obscure and cryptic ways.

The interlinking, interconnectedness of this jazz trio mimics the narrative of the great city. Individual musicians with their own geography, architecture and psychology, their connections with each other pulse in the same dynamic and energetic way that the city’s blood vessels continually pump. The rhythm of the city is a subtle undercurrent in the rhythmic interplay of Malija. The city has got under their skin and become part of what they play.

As Mark Lockheart explains: ‘The Day I Had Everything is about many musical things, often styles and influences that have come from our many diverse musical experiences working and devloping in London’s vibrant jazz scene. The melting pot of London’s multi-faceted music scene is reflected in the compositions ,to me this is London jazz music , distinct and different from the American sound”.

Pod wdzięczną nazwą Malija ukrywają się europejscy muzycy jazzowi, którzy dużej części fanów jazzu pozostają pewnie nieznani. Choć nie powinni.
Lider, angielski saksofonista Mark Lockheart od 80-tych lat brał udział w niezliczonej ilości projektów. Z formacją Perfect Houseplants nagrał sześć albumów, w tym dwa z jednym z najważniejszych zespołów muzyki barokowej - The Orlando Consort (dla Linn Records i Harmonia Mundi). Z grupą The Scratch Band, wykonującą tylko kompozycje Lockhearta wydał dwa albumy. Jednak najważniejszym zespołem, który tworzył, bez wątpienia jest kwintet Polar Bear. Zespół otrzymał aż dwie nominacje do Mercury Prize: w 2005 roku za album „Held on the Tips of Fingers” i w 2014 za materiał „In Each and Every One”. W tym okresie cały czas zachowują innowacyjność i wykraczają poza gatunki, łącząc w swojej muzyce jazz, rock, hip-hop czy elektronikę. Czasopismo Jazzwise umieściło płytę "Held on the Tips of Fingers" na liście "100 Jazz Albums That Shook The World". Ponadto Lockheart współpracuje z Radiohead ("Kid A"), High Llamas ("Hawaii"), czy Stereolab ("Fluoresences").

Jasper Hoiby to filar jednego z najlepszych europejskich triowych składów - Phronesis, którego jest liderem. Jazzwise opisywał ich jako "jeden z najbardziej ekscytujących zespołów na tej planecie". Płyta "Alive" wydana w 2010 roku przez Edition Records otrzymała zaszczytny tytuł Best Album 2010 wg. Mojo i Jazzwise.

Pianista Liam Noble najbardziej znany jest ze współpracy z Ingrid Laubrock, z którą nagrał kilka płyt dla wytwórni Intakt, ale także z Drew Gressem i Tomem Rainey'em, z którymi nagrał ceniony album "Romance Among the Fishes" czy z Mary Halvorson, Johnem Hébertem, Kris Davis. John Fordham z Guardiana napisał o nim "Noble likes a mixture of staccato, drily witty themes that suggest a collision of Steve Coleman and Django Bates with Wayne Shorter – and with Canadian piano guru Paul Bley in the quieter episodes".......
