“Presence is very important to me,” Enrico Pieranunzi said in an interview for Jazz thing magazine’s series “European Jazz Legends”. “The theater director Peter Brook speaks of ‘emptying yourself’ in order to perform. You should be empty in order to listen to yourself and to others – and to be in the moment. That to me is the essence of jazz.” Born in the Italian capital of Rome on December 5, 1949, young Enrico developed his love of jazz from his father and by imitating what he heard on 78s by the likes of Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz, Lennie Tristano and Chet Baker. The latter, with whom Pieranunzi eventually got to play and record in Italy in the early 80s, steered his piano influences away from McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea toward Bill Evans. Combining this with a sense of swing and serious lyricism, Enrico Pieranunzi is internationally known by now as a unique and decidedly European voice on his instrument, having won accolades and awards for his more than seventy recordings.
On August 29, 2015, Enrico Pieranunzi added a new chapter to this extensive discography with this live recording from Theater Gütersloh featuring his trio with the Dutch double bass player Jasper Somsen and French drummer André Ceccarelli. Playing intricately woven compositions by the leader and telling a few spontaneous “Impro Tales,” they aptly illustrate Pieranunzi’s initial statement – and make these “Tales from the Unexpected” a profound joy to listen to, forever in the moment.

"Enrico Pieranunzi jest niezwykle płodnym pianistą. Od 1975 r. nagrał kilkadziesiąt albumów. Był zapraszany na sesje nagraniowe i koncerty przez wybitnych jazzmanów m.in.: Cheta Bakera, Jima Halla, Lee Konitza i Phila Woodsa. W latach 1992 i 1997 r. otrzymał najwyższe francuskie wyróżnienie jazzowe Django d'Or, a w 2003 r. jego włoski odpowiednik. W latach l1989, 2003 i 2008 był wybierany Muzykiem Roku przez krytyków magazynu „Musica Jazz". Romantyczny, elegancki styl gry włoskiego pianisty wynika z klasycznego wykształcenia.

Jego główne inspiracje to muzyka Claude'a Debussy'ego i Billa Evansa, o którym napisał esej. A jednak brzmienie jego fortepianu jest unikalne. Krytycy cenią jego jazzowe nagrania, ale potrafił zadziwić interpretacją sonat Scarlattiego, do których dodał partie improwizowane. Dużo sam komponuje, napisał ponad 300 utworów, jest także wybitnym interpretatorem standardów, którym nadaje własny rys. „Jest pianistą lirycznym, stale wciela nowe idee, jednocześnie nie tracąc zdolności poetyckich. Jego muzyka śpiewa - napisał o nim krytyk Nat Hentoff. A recenzent Ray Spencer podkreślił w „aJazz Journal": „Enrico Pieranunzi tchnął nowe życie we współczesny jazz".

Najnowsze w dorobku Pieranunziego nagranie przywołuje to jego jazzowe, pogodnie-melancholijne oblicze. Pełne zamyślenie fortepianowe pasaże, mocno odwołujące się do klasycznej pianistyki spod znaku Debussy'ego czy nawet momentami Erica Satie, cudownie wpisują się w mocno osadzoną w swingu grę sekcji rytmicznej Jasper Somsen / Andre Ceccarelli. I chociaż gra włoskiego mistrza wydaje się być cały czas gdzieś obok formuły klasycznego tria, zdaje się być czymś osobnym, jest najpięknięjszym kawałkiem jazzowego świata w jakim uczestniczyłem od lat. Cudowne nagranie będące równocześnie trzecią częścią koncertowego i płytowego cyklu "Europejskich Legend Jazzu". Koniecznie!"
