Lovingly remastered from a series of long lost tapes dating back to the early 1960s, The Attic Tapes, is a vintage collection of previously unreleased recordings and early works by John Renbourn, one of guitar music’s truly great innovators. Due for release by Riverboat Records on 16th October 2015, The Attic Tapes represents in John’s own words, “what was happening to me at the time and a reflection of the general scene” These recordings were made in the two or three years before his first ever official release for Transatlantic Records, released in February 1966.

The 20 tracks include many true classics, all brilliantly performed and with particular care taken over the sound quality despite the rudimentary sources. There are a number of songs written by Renbourn (‘Judy’, ‘Plainsong’) alongside his unique interpretations of classic tracks which remained in his set throughout his life (‘Candyman’, ‘Can’t Keep From Crying’, ‘Come Back Baby’) plus others written by his contemporaries including Jackson C Frank’s ‘Blues Run the Game’ and Davy Graham’s ‘Anji’. This latter is a particular find: “What’s curious is that the date on the tape box is 1962,” says Renbourn in his notes, “which would make it a very early recording of Davy Graham’s classic….” Renbourn had first heard ‘Anji’ via his friend and guitarist Mac MacLeod; it was MacLeod who discovered the tape box in his attic, which began the chain of events and further discoveries that led to this invaluable new collection.

John Renbourn urodził się w 1943 roku. Już jako nastolatka interesowała go muzyka folkowa. Instruktażowa książka "How to Play Guitar" napisana przez Rory'ego McKuena, wprowadziła Renbourna w świat amerykańskiej muzyki folkowej. Zaczął coraz bardziej interesować się nią i badać. W 1964 roku Renbourn podjął studia muzyczne w kierunku gitara klasyczna w George Abbot School w Guildford. Dwa lata później grał muzykę folkową w klubach w Soho, gdzie miał kontakt z takimi muzykami, jak Paul Simon, Davey Graham i Bert Jansch.

Renbourn i Jansch byli współlokatorami, dlatego często zdarzało im się grywać wspólnie improwizowane sesje. Obaj szybko zauważyli jak łatwo im się ze sobą gra. Renbpourn pojawił się na drugim albumie Jansch'a, a następnie nagrali razem płytę "Bert and John". W 1967 onaj założyli Pentangle i pozostali w tym zespole do 1978 roku. Renbourn, podobnie jak inni członkowie grupy, wydawał także albumy solowe, jak choćby "The Hermit" i "The Black Balloon". Później stworzył John Renbourn Group, który to zespół grając brytyjską muzykę korzystał z indyjskich instrumentów perkusyjnych i jazzowych drewnianych instrumentów dętych.

W połowie lat 80-tych Renbourn połączył swe siły z gitarzystą Stefanem Grossmanem. Razem zagrali wiele koncertów na całym świecie. Zdążyli też nagrać dwa albumy, zanim Renbourn założył nowy zespół - Ship of Fools, w którym pojawiła się muzyka ze znacznie silniejszymi wpływami celtyckimi. Jednocześnie koncertował z innymi gitarzystami, w tym równiez z Grossmanem.

Niekiedy Renbourn pojawiał się na okazjonalnych koncertach z Janschem, lub szkockim gawędziarzem Robinem Williamsonem.
Zmarł rok temu, 26 marca 2015 r.

Materiał na płytę "The Attic Tapes" została wybrany z oryginalnych taśm dokumentujących wczesne nagrania Johna Redbourna z początku lat sześćdziesiątych ubiegłego stulecia. Starannie zreamasterowane i poddane rozmaitym zabiegom piosenki to zbiór wcześniej niepublikowan.......
