This has been a year of rescue and recognition for the late, great reedist John Carter. In addition to this release, a reissue of certified hen’s tooth Echoes From Rudolph’s, we’ve also been gifted a reissue of Carter and Bobby Bradford’s stunning Self-Determination Music, and No U Turn: Live in Pasadena 1975, apreviously-unheard concert recording salvaged by the excellent Dark Tree Records.

Echoes From Rudolph’s was the sole release on Carter’s Ibedon label, originally issued in 1977 in a scant edition of 550. Like too much of Carter’s music, it quickly went out of print, lost to all but the most steadfast collectors. The album (and the live performance included as a second CD) features Carter largely in a trio context with his son Stanley on bass and drummer William Jeffrey. Both recordings are firm assertions of Carter the instrumentalist, rather than the composer and bandleader. His virtuosity is the nucleus of this music, pushing at the limits of the soprano saxophone and clarinet, the two reeds he had increasingly gravitated toward in the years leading up to Echoes. In fact, according to Mark Weber in No U Turn’s liner notes, “Angles”—the solo clarinet midpoint of Echoes, recorded a year after the rest of the material—was Carter’s first statement after definitively choosing clarinet, which he would play exclusively from then until his death in 1991.

The title track is a blustery affair, Carter slurring and sputtering in the upper ranges of the clarinet, dragging the rhythm section along with him. Carter is all velocity, his supersonic runs adorned with trills and vibrato that seem to double the number of notes, his altissimo at the very edges of audibility, notes screeching into outer space. Stanley Carter and Jeffrey make a valiant effort to keep up, though there are moments when the three independent voices struggle to cohere. .......

"Bardzo mnie cieszy, że są takie wydawnictwa jak litewska oficyna NoBusisness, która oprócz nowej muzyki, sięga także po archiwalne nagrania uznanych sław jazzu. Nie jest jednak najczęściej tylko i wyłącznie wznawianie starszych, od lat niedostępnych, wydawanych pierwotnie w skromniutkich nakładzie tytułów, ale prawdziwie eksploracyjna praca, ukazująca te dzieła w nowym, historycznym kontekście, uzupełnione o bogate studia i niepublikowane ścieżki.

Nie inaczej jest z zarejestrowaną w trio (z basistą Stanley'em Carterem oraz perkusistą William'em Jeffrey'em) płytą klarnecisty i saksofonisty Johna Cartera. Pierwotnie wydana w roku 1977 w sygnalnym nakładzie 550 egzemplarzy przez oficynę Ibedon, doczekała się teraz bardzo starannej reedycji i dodano do niej nie lada smaczek - zarejestrowaną trzy miesiące wcześniej w studiu w studiu publicznej stacji radiowej KPFK w Los Angeles sesję tego samego składu. To był właściwie przełomowy moment dla muzyki Johna Cartera - do tej pory bowiem grywał równocześnie na saksofonach i klarnecie. Po tym albumie właściwie już ostatecznie zdecydował się na klarnet, któremu poświęcił resztę życia (do śmierci w roku 1991). Jak zauważa jeden z krytyków - cała album (w tym przypadku - pierwsza płyta CD) zbudowany jest wokół utworu "Angles" - to centralny punkt tego nagrania, w którym Carter gra tylko na klarnecie. A właśnie ten instrument jest jądrem muzyki na tej płycie.

Sam album, a zwłaszcza dodana sesja, ciąży jednak ku czasom wcześniejszym. Ukazuje ona sposób w jaki John Carter i jego zespół pracował nad materiał na płytę. I chociaż całość nie jest doskonała technicznie (pojawia się tu często wrażenie zniekształcenia brzmienia Cartera na taśmie), przydaje ona jednak raczej emocji i dramatyczności niż stanowi jakąś istotną wadę dla tego pięknego nagrania. Większość drugiego albumu to jeden długi utwór składający z czterech nieznanych (i nierozpoznanych) kompozycji rozpiętych od szybkiego, mocnego free do jazz.......
