Few jazzmen from Portugal have the opportunity to play with foreign musicians like Portuguese trumpeter Luís Vicente. After collaborations with the brothers Théo and Valentin Ceccaldi, Johannes Bauer, Jorrit Dijkstra, Akira Sakata, Giovanni di Domenico, Jasper Stadhouders, Roberto Negro and Mette Rasmussen, among others, in “Live at Zaal 100” we find him in the company of the Amsterdam-based stars John Dikeman, Wilbert De Joode and Onno Govaert. The music goes full throttle in the grey area between free improvisation and free bop, exposing the inventiveness and the technical skills of the players involved. Vicente is a heir of Don Cherry’s warm and round sound, with a twist of subtlety unexpectedly coming from Kenny Wheeler – like both of them, he has arguments and use them in a flowing, natural way. Dikeman is always pushing the limits of the tenor saxophone as far as it goes, going from one extreme (over-blowing, dense multiphonics) to the other (using breath, spit and extended procedures like slap-tonguing) to the other, either evoking Albert Ayler or the reductionist tendency. De Joode is here at his best, showing why he is considered one of the most important contrabassists in the world, keeping his style unique, fresh and wonderfully creative. Govaert is a show by himself using the drumsticks, responsible in great part for the combustion provided to the music and a kind of more direct and loose Jim Black. Saying it more clearly: this is hot, boiling, mind-blowing stuff.

"Od kilku dobrych lat pojawiają się na muzycznej scenie Europy zupełnie nowi muzycy, którzy bez kompleksów grają i improwizują, nawiązują współpracę ze swoimi rówieśnikami z innych krajów, ale też z co bardziej otwartymi, uznanymi postaciami na jazzowej scenie (zwłaszcza awangradowej i free jazzowej - ona zawsze była otwarta). Nagrywają płyty i zyskują doświadczenie oraz publiczność. I bardzo często czynią to wszystko bez żadnego wsparcia ze strony instytucji czy wielkich muzycznych koncernów. Ale dzięki temu zyskują kompletną twórczą wolność.

Portugalia nie jest tu wyjątkiem, a jednym z ostatnio odkrytych przeze mnie młodych tamtejszych twórców jest Luís Vicente - kompozytor, trębacz, improwizator. Po licznych kolaboracjach z Theo oraz Valentin Ceccaldi (świetny album "Deux Maisons"), Johannesem Bauerem, Jorritem Dijkstrą, Akira Sakatą, Giovannim di Domenico, Jasperem Stadhoudersem, Roberto Negro i Mette Rasmussen zawitał i na sceny Holandii. Było to we wrześniu ubiegłego roku (2015), ale właśnie teraz słynna i znakomita portugalska wytwórnia Clean Feed wydała album wtedy, w klubie Zaal 100, zarejestrowany. Jest to koncertowe nagranie zespołu Twenty One 4tet w którego składzie - "pierwsze bodaj skrzypce" - gra na trąbce Luís Vicente.

Partnerów ma znakomitych - Amerykanin John Dikeman to muzyk młody, ale i uznany po obu stronach Atlantyku (na stałe mieszka w Holandii), grający często z czołowymi postaciami sceny chicagowskiej (Michael Zerang, Dave Rempis, Kent Kessler); Wilbert de Joode to chyba najbardziej ceniony holenderski basista, od lat obecny na jazzowej scenie, od lat członek tria Aba Baarsa, ale i ICP Orchestra, nagrywający i koncertujący z największymi współczesnymi muzykami awangardowego jazzu - Davidem Liebmanem, Kenem Vandermarkiem, Frankiem Gratkowskim, Tobiasem Deliusem, Hanem Benninkiem.
