The Eric Revis Trio is back, this time with Gerald Cleaver using sticks against skins and metal, replacing his elders Andrew Cyrille from “City of Asylum” – Cecil Taylor’s drummer of choice for a decade – and John Betsch from the project’s recent European tour – Steve Lacy’s partner for the same period of time. The brilliant newcomer Kris Davis remains at the piano. Although the music is different, the principles, objectives and personality are the same, coming from the mind and heart of the same man who has plucked his double bass for 17 years with the Branford Marsalis Quartet. “Crowded Solitudes” is another example of Revis’s “back-to-the-future” philosophy: the invention of the future of jazz is rooted in its past and tradition. With this attitude the bassist and composer defined his path in the world of jazz, travelling the routes of the mainstream and the avant-garde, with Kurt Rosenwinkel or Peter Brötzmann. In the case of this mutable trio, the tradition is represented by free-jazz and its connection with earlier forms and vocabularies. What’s coming appears through the creative exploration of all of the assumptions of the Sixties “New Thing”, showing that there’s always something new after the new gets old. As Soren Kierkegaard wrote, «life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forward.»

W nieco odmienionym składzie (nestora Andrew Cyrille's i John'ego Bethscha zastąpił przy perkusji niezwykle ceniony i znany z licznych awangardowych projektów czy choćby współpracy z Charlesem Lloydem i Tomaszem Stańo Gerald Cleaver) powraca trio prowadzone przez basistę Erica Revisa.


To muzyk który jako lider nie nagrał zbyt wiele do tej pory - kilka nagrań w trio, kwartet z Jasonem Moranem i Kenem Vandermarkiem to wcale nie tak wiele jak długą już sceniczną karierę muzyka. Ale jest niezwykłym i bardzo cenionym sidemanem - przez ponad siedemnaście lat był muzykiem kwartetu Brandforda Marsalisa z którym zjeździł właściwie cały świat. I ta trwająca lata współpraca jest najlepszą rekomendacją dla Revisa.

Skład tria uzupełnia młoda, ale wielce już ceniona Kris Davis, jak zwykle za klawiaturą fortepianu. Mimo, że muzyka jest inna, zasady i cele pozostają właściwie te same, a głównym hasłem pozostaje "back-to-the-future", rozumiane jednak nie jako tworzenie w duchu hardbopu czy postbopu, ale jako poszukiwanie własnej twórczej drogi czerpiąc z tradycji i szukając w niej inspiracji dla własnej twórczości, i własnego indywidualnego języka. Bo - jak mówi sam Revis - odwołują się do tradycji zarówno Peter Brotzmann jak i Kurt Rosenwinkel. Ale tradycja dla Revisa to także free jazz więc i on obecny jest w jego muzyce jako część spuścizny i tradycji, ale też twórcza wolność, którą wraz z zespołem stara się realizować.

I taka właśnie jest najnowsza płyta tria, czerpiąca z tradycji, ale szukająca nowych środków i form wyrazu, otwarta, ale ubrana w język kompozycji. Świetny warsztat, świetne granie i ani chwili nudy. Polecam!
