With only 26 years of age, alto saxophonist Chris Pitsiokos is the face of the new generation of musicians who are changing the New York scene. Wild, fierce and raw, his personal playing style is making waves all around, and it’s not a real surprise to find in his Unit some of the most adventurous figures active in the frontier between jazz and rock, namely Brandon Seabrook (Peter Evans, Anthony Braxton, Seabrook Power Plant), Tim Dahl (Child Abuse, Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, Pulverize the Sound) and Weasel Walter (The Flying Luttenbachers, Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, Cellular Chaos). On previous releases, which include musicians like Philip White, Ron Anderson and Kevin Shea, or as a soloist, he’s been committed to the expansion of the possibilities of his instrument, pushing it beyond its limits under the influence of noise music and extreme contemporary composers like Iannis Xenakis and Helmut Lachenmann. For this project he wants something else: to play jazz with all its formal aspects, using the melody-improvisation-melody traditional structure but stuffing it with his experimental aesthetical vision. “Before the Heat Death” is the consequence, equating what we usually recognize as jazz with bizarre and even unique materials. It’s so exciting that you start jumping like crazy in your living room.

Ma zeldwie 26 lat, ale Chris Pitsiokos, altowy saksofonista, jest twarzą i symbolem zupełnie nowego pokolenia muzyków, którzy wdzierają się na scenę Nowego Yorku. Dziki, ostry, surowy, ale nie histeryczny (w przeciwieństwie choćby do Johna Zorna) sposób gry tego muzyka od pierwszych dźwięków przyciąga uwagę, a prędkość z jaką potrafi wyrzucać ze swojego instrumentu kaskady dźwięków i eklektyczność jego muzycznej wizję sprawią, iż nie sposób uciec od porównań właśnie z "papieżem nowojorskiej awangardy".

Do swojego najnowszego kwartetu zaprosił podobne sobie niespokojne duchy, chociaż wszyscy są o pokolenie, albo i więcej od niego starsi. Zaprosił chyba tych, których muzyka go fascynuje i inspiruje. Gitarzysta Brandon Seabrook grywał już u boku Petera Evansa i Anthony'ego Braxtona i prowadzi autorski Seabrook Power Plant. Basista Tim Dahl w Polsce jest znany z legendarnego tria The Hub, ale też Child Abuse, Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, Pulverize The Sound. No i ma w dorobku także współpracę z Paulem Dunmallem czy Henrym Kaiserem. No i perkusista Weasel Walter, twórca legendarnego The Flying Luttenbachers (z Kenem Vandermarkiem na saksofonie), partner chyba wszystkich cenionych muzyków na scenach awangardy tak rockowej jak i jazzowej Nowego Yorku i okolic.

W sumie muzyka jest wypadkową tych doświadczeń, ciągłe zmiany temp i nastrojów, odwołania niemal do wszystkich awangardowych tradycji i ciągły ruch, który dla Pitsiokosa wydaje się drogą i celem równocześnie. A przy tym staranne kompozycje, przemyślana formuła i spora doza spazmatycznej, pełnej energetycznych paroksyzmów improwizacji. W swoim rodzaju - mistrzostwo świata!
