After 20 years, one of the most important albums of the 90s on the Polish electronic, experimental and post-rock scene has received its first edition on vinyl.
MAPA is a project by Paul Wirkus and Marcin Dymiter, the album Fudo was released in 1998 by Antena Krzyku as a CD and cassette. Considered in contemporary reviews to be the first and most important Polish post-rock album.
Mapa was the first Polish band to receive an article in the monthly magazine The Wire. In December 1998 they wrote about them, among others:
"For Those who still associate Poland with music of the pre- rathe than the post-rock kind, Mapa's debut CD, "Fudo", will come as a real treat. It is packed with post-rock's understated but feisty motorik pulses, and the spaces opened up by the apre, repetitive rhythms serve as an apt musical metaphor for the continental divide separating Mapa's two principals. Marcin Dymiter, on guitar and bass, lives in Gdańsk, while Paul Wirkus, on samples and drums, moved to Cologne nine years ago. (...) The Mapa sound quickly took shape: simple, jazz-inflected double basslines are a constant presence, above which Dymiter typically unfurls a meandering guitar line, hovering magically in its own echo. design of texture-oriented producers such as DJ Vadim. The duo's twin coordinates suggest a familiarity with German and, more specifically, Cologne post-rock".
A fragment of Rafał Księżyk's text from a special insert included with the vinyl reissue:
I first listened to "Fudo" by Mapa right after its premiere, in 1998. Before I even had time to like the record, I was already proud of it as a Polish answer to post-rock. What would I have thought if I had known that at that moment the best post-rock albums had already been released?

It is packed with post-rock's understated but feisty motorik pulses, and the spaces opened up by the apre, repetitive rhythms serve as an apt musical metaphor for the continental divide separating Mapa's two principals. The Mapa sound quickly took shape: simple, jazz-inflected double basslines are a constant presence, above which Dymiter typically unfurls a meandering guitar line, hovering magically in its own echo. By the time they recorde Fudo on the first three days of 1998, Mapa had achieved an easy balance between post-rock minimalism, and the eerie gilding swing and quirky design of texture-orientated producers such as DJ Vadim. The duo's twin ccordinates suggest a familiarity with German and, more specifically, Cologne post-rock".
