On The Astral Revelations alto saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc breathes new vitality into the legacy of the loft jazz era where he first made his name. It's a reputation most forcefully burnished in retrospect by the sumptuous box set Muntu Recordings (No Business, 2010), which showcases Moondoc alongside such future luminaries as bassist William Parker and the late trumpeter Roy Campbell.

After a hiatus in terms of recording in the early noughties, he's become active once again, resulting in a sequence of albums on the NYC Relative Pitch imprint, culminating in the excellent Zookeeper's House (2014). One of the surprises then was the appearance of pre-eminent piano improviser Matthew Shipp as a sideman on two tracks. That quartet with Shipp toured Europe in 2016 and this disc presents them in full flow from the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.

Moondoc's characteristic combination of astringent blues-drenched tone and post-Ayler wail, interspersed with vocal asides, remains one of the most distinctive sounds in modern jazz. Add to that Shipp's singular style amalgamating insistent motifs, melodic shards, thunderous crashes and cleanly articulated sparkling lines, and you have something very special.

Jemeel Moondoc należy do wąskiej grupy muzyków operujących niezmyślonym językiem. Tak jak Ornette Coleman, Derek Bailey, John Coltrane, Fred Anderson, Albert Ayler, Thelonious Monk, William Parker, czy Don Cherry, w swojej pracy twórczej używa siebie do tworzenia muzyki. Nie zapożycza, nie kradnie, nie patchworkuje z gotowych elementów, nie kopiuje pomysłów innych. Każdy uważny fan jazzu wie, że tacy muzycy to rzadkie okazy, wielokaratowe szafiry. Eufemizmem jest twierdzenie, że jest to postawa, dająca materialną satysfakcję. Moondoc podobnie jak chociażby David S. Ware czy Henry Grimes często klepał biedę, płacił za swoją bezkompromisowość wysoką cenę, wypadając z muzycznego życia na lata.

Z urodzenia szikagowiec, z wyboru nowojorczyk, edukację muzyczną rozpoczynał od nauki gry na fortepianie. We wczesnych latach 70. pobierał nauki u Cecila Taylora. W roku 1972 przeniósł się do Nowego Jorku, zakładając Jus Grew Orchestra. Niebawem stanął na czele swej najsłynniejszej grupy - Muntu. Zespół współtworzyli Roy Campbell jr - trąbka, William Parker - bass i Rashid Bakr - perkusja. Nie sposób nie polecić przy tej okazji doskonałej pozycji z oficyny NoBusiness Records " Muntu Recordings [3CD + Book]" - prawdziwy rarytas.

Wydana właśnie w barwach cenionej francuskiej oficynie Rogue ART, nowa płyta nestora loft jazzu "The Astral Revelations", to rejestracja koncertu jego kwartetu, który odbył się w Amsterdamie, w klubie Bimhuis, jednym z najlepszych europejskich klubów jazzowych, w 2016 roku. Słyszymy kwartet w składzie Jemeel Moondoc na alcie, Matthew Shipp na fortepianie, na kontrabasie Hilliard Greene i za perkusją Newman Taylor Baker. Jest to zupełnie inny kwartet, niż ten, który gościliśmy w Polsce ponad 10 lat temu. Wtedy narracja kwartetu prowadzona była przez dwa dęciaki, alt Moondoca i trąbkę Roy'a Campbella Jr. Teraz uwagę słuchaczy przykuwa Moondoc i fortepian Shippa.
