Markus Burger writes of his new release: Since I was a child, I have loved the outdoors and fell in love with the vast wilderness of Alaska and Iceland. In 2000 I visited Iceland for the first time and wrote most of the songs for my solo piano release Ultreya which came out in 2001 on Jazzline Records. It took me until 2002 to go to Alaska and visit Valdez and the Kenai Peninsula. I was blown away by the beauty of Alaska and the uniqueness of the folks that live there. Through my affiliation with Idyllwilds Jazz Academy director Marshall Hawkins, one of the finest bassists on the West coast and a great Jazz Educator, I was fortunate enough to start teaching for a few semesters in Homer Alaska. In 2015 and 2016 I got to visit Kodiak Island, which left a lifetime impression on me. The songs on this album were written in Alaska over the years of my trips to this wilderness state. When planning this albums recording session, I asked Bob Magnusson to play bass, because we share the love of musical elegance and simplicity- and because I truly love Bobs bass sound (like so many others before me). I have admired Peter Erskine since I first heard him perform with his ECM Trio featuring John Taylor and Palle Danielsson. I love his playing and his compositions and I was thrilled when he agreed to be part of this musical projectJim Linahon has been the sound wizard behind all of my albums for Challenge Records and he is in my humble opinion one of the finest engineers and producers for Jazz in the U.S. today. Miałem już przyjemność recenzować dla multikulti.com płytę niemieckiego pianisty Markusa Burgera. Była to duetowa "Spiritual Standards Quinta - Songs Inspired by Martin Luther" nagrana z saksofonistą Janem von Klewitzem (Challenge Records 2017). Nagrodziłem ją wysoką notą * * * * 1/2. Potwierdzeniem tak wysokiej oceny niech będzie Nagroda Jana Sebastiana Bacha (Bach Award from the City of Erfurt) za innowacyjną interpretację dzieł legendarnego kompozytora.

Warto przypomnieć też wartościowe nagranie "The Banff Sessions - A Tribute to Kenny Wheeler" (Challenge Classics 2015).

Tym razem Markus Burger (rocznik 1966) zaprosił do współpracy amerykańską sekcję rytmiczną - perkusistę Petera Erskine'a (rocznik 1954) i kontrabasistę Boba Magnussona (rocznik 1947). Obydwaj muzycy to legendy drugiego planu historii jazzu.
Magnusson to współpracownik m.in. Sarah Vaughan, Arta Peppera, Lou Donaldsona, Clifforda Jordana, Joe Passa, Kenny'ego Barrona, Freddie'go Hubbarda, Tommy'ego Flanagana, Kenny'ego Burrella, ale także zespołu 10,000 Maniacs i Madonny.
Erskine'a z kolei słuchaliśmy w zespołach Stana Kentona, Maynarda Fergusona, Weather Report, Step Ahead, Boba Mintzera, Diana Krall, Eliane Elias, ale też Queen Latifah, Kate Bush i Lindy Ronstadt.

"The Alaska Sessions - Accidental Tourists" to nieco marzycielska, utrzymana w minimalistycznej formie jazzowa pianistyka, przywodząca na myśl nagrania tria niezapomnianego Billa Evansa. Tak jak tam melodia i improwizacja stanowiły fundament jazzowej narracji, tak i tutaj z jednym wyjątkiem własne kompozycje Burgera (10) i jedna Magnussona eksponują idealny balans pomiędzy wpadającymi w ucho, niebanalnymi melodiami a walorem skrzącej się improwizacji. To muzyka, w której dominują raczej chwile zadumy niż dynamiczne ucieczki przed zastaną rzeczywistością.
