For many years Witches & Devils, the long-running Albert Ayler tribute band led by saxophonist Mars Williams, have existed mostly as an excuse to get together and perform an annual Chicago holiday concert.
For these memorable concerts, Williams merges a variety of Christmas songs with the indelible repertoire of free-jazz titan Ayler, who brought a scalding intensity to tunes rooted in gospel and spirituals. It may sound silly, but the performances are no joke, and they produce a seriously joyful noise. The band tackles warhorses like “O Tannenbaum” and “12 Days of Christmas” in the same smoldering fashion as their take on Ayler: the rhythm section bubbles and generates a kind of levitating intensity during the wonderfully expressive, multilinear theme statements, while the horns state familiar melodies in loose cries and the embellished lines of each player pull apart and coalesce in a naturalistic frenzy. Williams designs clever medleys that appropriate the pulse and feel of particular Ayler tunes as the band rips through a greatest-hits lineup of holiday tracks.

I don't know what you all think, but it seems to me that a free jazz (of the fiery variety) holiday album is right on cue. I'm not in the mood for sweet, gentle, or traditional this year, there is just too much going on that is not sweet, gentle, or traditional, but I'm also not quite ready to forgo holiday cheer entirely. So, why not add a primal honk to some timeless Yule-tide melodies? I almost guarantee this is the mashup of 'Twelve Days of Christmas' and Albert Ayler's iconic 'Spirits' that you did not realize you had been missing.

Chicago-based saxophonist Mars Williams has been hosting a holiday show in the Windy City for the past several years. This year - I suppose sensing that the time was right - he has released Mars Williams presents: An Ayl.......

Czy pisanie o płytach z muzyką związaną z okresem świąt Bożego Narodzenia kilka miesięcy po sylwestrze może mieć sens? Może, jeśli są to albumy tak niezwykłe, jak to, co zaproponował chicagowski saksofonista Mars Williams.

Okołoświąteczne wydawnictwa nie są domeną jednego tylko gatunku czy stylu muzycznego. całą pewnością mniej jest artystów, którzy nie posiadają w swoim dorobku przynajmniej jednego krążka z tego rodzaju repertuarem, niż takich, którzy pomogli swoim talentem wzbogacić magię świąt.
Tak zwane „christmasy” nagrywali między innymi Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, a ostatnio pokusił się o to nawet bóg gitary, sam wielki Eric Clapton.
Jeśli idzie o jazzowe podwórko, najpopularniejsze oczywiście były i są albumy wokalistek i wokalistów, choć historia zna też nagrania wybitnych instrumentalistów jazzowych poczynione na okoliczność świąt Bożego Narodzenia – z Dukiem Ellingtonem, Milesem Davisem i Dexterem Gordonem na czele. W całym tym bogactwie królują jednak gładkie aranże i dźwięki spod znaku easy listening. Rzadko trafiają się propozycje z kręgu bardziej wyrafinowanego grania, a zupełnie po macoszemu traktowani są fani free jazzu. To może dziwić, jeśli uzmysłowimy sobie, że muzyka o duchowej i religijnej podbudowie stanowi wcale pokaźny nurt w obrębie gatunku. Zdaje się, że do tej pory najbliżej spuścizny sceny eksperymentalnej sytuowała się znakomita płyta Carli Bley Carla’s
Christmas Carols, która ukazała się w 2009 roku.
Sytuowała się, bo oto Mars Williams, którego dokonania (między innymi z formacją Boneshaker i w składzie Chicago Edge Ensemble) przybliżałem już Państwu na naszych łamach, wpadł na niecodzienny pomysł połączenia tematów zaczerpniętych ze świątecznego repertuaru z muzyką jednego z najbardziej uduchowionych pionierów free jazzu – Alberta Aylera.
