The timeline begins in 2001 when a trio comprised of Paula Morelenbaum, her husband, the cellist Jacques Morelenbaum, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, a pianist and free thinker from Japan, released the album “Casa” and promptly harvested enthusiastic acclaim worldwide. The three of them defined a way of working with Brazilian songwriting that was all their own.
12 years later, a new transatlantic trio with Paula Morelenbaum as lead vocalist got together that set off on the trail of the term ‘song’ from a German and Brazilian, European and South American viewpoint. With “Samba Preludio”, the incipient Bossarenova Trio featuring Paula Morelenbaum on vocals, Joo Kraus on trumpet, spoken word & beatbox, and Ralf Schmid on piano & electronics delivered a melancholy soundtrack interfaced between classical, jazz and South American music. Now, on the album “Atlantico” recorded in Rio de Janeiro and Berlin, the trio has evolved its ‘grooving’ side and kicks off in Rio’s quarter renowned for its samba sounds.

Trumpet player and ECHO Jazz award-winner Joo Kraus, pianist and arranger Ralf Schmid, Kraus’s companion on many a project, and singer Paula Morelenbaum, a native of Rio de Janeiro, became acquainted in 2009 on the occasion of the Bossarenova big-band project from SWR Bigband. The German regional broadcaster SWR’s intent was to employ opulent jazz arrangements to breathe new life into the timeless classics of Brazilian bossa nova. After numerous concerts where the three of them appeared with SWR Bigband, it was as good as predestined that this nucleus shared the wish to go on stage as a trio. Concerts ranging from San Francisco to New York City and across the ocean to Berlin and Hamburg ensured that the newly christened “Bossarenova Trio” worked their different and mutual roots deeper and deeper into their music.
