TRIBUTE TO MCCOY TYNER

"Janczarski & Siddik 4tet – Contemplation is a continuation of the album series for the publishing house For Tune®, a record of the concert from the series "Directed by…", from 12/14 Jazz Club in Warsaw – one of the last before the pandemic (January 2020). The choice of songs was made by that evening’s special guest, Rasul Siddik – American trumpeter from St. Louis and member of the AACM, an outstanding artist who has collaborated with jazz legends such as Lester Bowie, Bobby Few, Archie Shepp, Henry Threadgill and David Murray. The line-up "mustered" for this one concert had the luck and honour of hosting the legend of Polish jazz drumming, my friend and mentor Kazimierz Jonkisz, in whose bands I have played since 2001. The title track Contemplation was written by McCoy Tyner (album: The Real McCoy). The author himself said that he was inspired by contemplation of "the meaning of life", the essence and purpose of human existence, our vocation, what justifies the hardship of life and makes it worth living - a topic that has been present since the beginning of human history. The album is dedicated to McCoy Tyner, who died on March 6, 2020 – in my opinion, the greatest jazz pianist of all time.” (Borys Janczarski)

Mingus, McCoy, Woody Shaw, Don Cherry, Henderson – a whole galaxy of not only stars of jazz, but of Masters of composition as well. How it’s played! Youth (Janczarski and Jaros) and experience (Siddik and the extraordinary Jonkisz) give the effect of a double-bound synergy. Here we’ll find both unbridled freeform and solid mainstream. A superstar here is also the late Jim Pepper, a native American (descendent of the Kaw tribe through his father, and the Cherokee through his mother) who didn’t just renounce the culture of his birth, but tried to propagate it. „Janczarski & Siddik 4tet – Contemplation to kontynuacja cyklu płyt dla wydawnictwa For Tune®, zapis koncertu z cyklu „Directed by...” z warszawskiego klubu 12/14, jednego z ostatnich przed pandemią (styczeń 2020). Wyboru utworów dokonał Rasul Siddik – gość specjalny tego wieczora, amerykański trębacz pochodzący z St. Louis, członek AACM, wybitny artysta, współpracownik legend jazzu takich jak Lester Bowie, Bobby Few, Archie Shepp, Henry Threadgill czy David Murray. Skład „skrzyknięty” na ten jeden koncert miał szczęście i zaszczyt gościć legendę polskiej perkusji jazzowej, mojego przyjaciela i mentora Kazimierza Jonkisza, w którego zespołach gram od 2001 r. Tytułowy utwór Contemplation napisał McCoy Tyner (płyta: The Real McCoy). Sam autor mówił o nim, że zainspirowała go kontemplacja „sensu życia”, istota i cel ludzkiej egzystencji, nasze powołanie, to co uzasadnia trud życia i czyni je wartym przeżycia – temat aktualny od początków dziejów człowieka. Płyta dedykowana jest właśnie McCoyowi Tynerowi, zmarłemu 6 marca 2020 r., najwspanialszemu – moim zdaniem – pianiście jazzowemu wszechczasów." (Borys Janczarski)

Młodość (Janczarski i Jaros) i doświadczenie (Siddik i znakomity Jonkisz) dają efekt podwójnie zapętlonej synergii. Znajdziemy tu i rozwydrzoną frytę i dostojny mainstream. Supergwiazdą jest tu także śp. Jim Peppper, native American, który nie tylko nie wyparł się kultury urodzenia, ale starał się ją upowszechniać. Jego pejotystyczny utwór Witchi Tai To wyśpiewuje na tym krążku braciak ze wspólnych bandów Rasul Siddik. Rewelacja! (red.)
