Trio WAZ embraces the precedent presaged by other illustrious jazz-based ensembles like JPJ, FAB and DKV in using surnames-sourced acronyms as shorthand handle for band identification. What That’s What it WAZ lacks in nominal nuance it more than compensates for in content. Wind multi-instrumentalist Edward Wilkerson has a long career in improvised music, but the majority of his projects have stressed his skills as a leader and a composer in a collectivist context. His longest going concern, 8 Bold Souls is a staunchly group venture where avenues to hear him as a soloist frequently defer to the contributions of his colleagues and grander group schemes. Wilkerson’s work as an educator with the AACM takes up a lot of his available time as well. All of which makes the music on this set instantly welcome in that it features his woodwinds with just two other Chicago-based stalwarts, bassist Tatsu Aoki and drummer Michael Zerang, as company and counterpoint.
Two discs, one studio derived from the summer of 2015, the other recorded at the now defunct Velvet Lounge in the fall of 2008, tally to a total of two hours and change in music. The latter date finds the trio at its most ruminative and diffusive, holding court in front of a responsive audience at one of the venerated shrines of improvised music. Aoki was a regular there over the years, often in support of proprietor and AACM founder Fred Anderson’s improvisation-riddled performances. The music in this context has instant commonalities with the trio working off spontaneously agreed upon riffs and vamps like the loping bass figure that buoys “Not Count Me Out” under Wilkerson’s somber legato blowing for nearly nine-minutes. “Parlor Games” and “Charmed Life” both spool to well over twice that length, the first shaping an itinerary from shadow-tinged clarinet, tapered arco bass and bowed cymbals to the clink of patron glassware whil.......

Unikalna fuzja trzech jazzowych osobowości, trzech kultur – afroamerykańskiej (Wilkerson), azjatyckiej (Aoki) i Bliskiego Wschodu (Zerang).

EDWARD WILKERSON to saksofonista, kompozytor, aranżer. Już jako młody muzyk pod wpływem Muhala Richarda Abramsa i Henry'ego Threadgilla został członkiem chicagowskiego AACM. Grał na pierwszych płytach zespołu Ethnic Heritage Ensemble prowadzonego przez Kahila El'Zabara ("Three Gentlemen From Chicago") oraz był liderem kilku własnych zespołów w Chicago. Wystąpił w roli aranżera i dyrygenta projektu Birth Of A Notion wykonywanego przez big band muzyków AACM Shadow Vignettes, łącząc efekty orkiestrowe z jazzem. Razem z Mwatą Bowdenem powołał oktet 8 Bold Souls (z Naomi Millender na wiolonczeli, Harrisonem Bankeadem na basie i Aaronem Doddem na tubie). Z Nicole Mitchell współpracuje w składzie kolektywu Frequency. W 1994 roku zadebiutował z Ed Wilkerson Quartet's krążkiem "Light On The Path". Wilkerson swoja grą nawiązuje do Johna Coltrane'a. Jest znakomitym saksofonistą, flecistą i klarnecistą. Z powodzeniem aranżuje utwory na duże składy instrumentalne.

TATSU AOKI to jeden z najaktywniejszych muzyków chicagowskiej sceny jazzowej. Kompozytor, lider, nauczyciel, organizator i producent poruszający się ze swobodą wśród wielu różnych stylów muzycznych, od tradycyjnej muzyki z azjii, przez klasyczny jazz i blues, po rocka i współczesną muzykę improwizowaną. Znakomity basista, wirtuoz gry na koreańskim bębnie Taiko Drum i shamizen. Ukończył The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, gdzie dziś wykłada sztukę video i film awangardowy. W Chicago stworzył oddział Asian Improv aRts, organizuje warsztaty i koncerty oraz edycję festiwalu Asian American Jazz Festival w Chicago.
