Made of Bones was formed in 2020 with: Duarte Fonseca on drums, João Clemente on guitar, Nuno Santos Dias on waldorf, and Ricardo Sousa on double bass. Drawing from rock, experimental, and noise influences, their music captivates listeners with its unique blend of genres.
The members of Made of Bones have been playing together for over 15 years in various bands, including Slow is Possible and Cat in a Bag (both released on Clean Feed), Salad Ensemble, Sideways, TMR & The Sea Wolves, and more. This shared history has fostered a strong bond between the musicians and honed their signature sound that reflects their individual strengths.
In the face of the pandemic's challenges, Made of Bones has shown remarkable perseverance, releasing three albums under the label Profound Whatever. Their latest offering, "Handgun," is their fourth release and their first collaboration with Phonogram Unit. The album showcases spontaneous, energetic, and idiosyncratic music that reflects the band's organic sound.
"Handgun" was recorded in October 2022 at Profound Whatever Studio, Pesinho. The secluded location provides a space where there is nothing to do except create, allowing the band to fully explore and express their musical vision. This setting captures the essence of Made of Bones' unique style and creative spirit.
The album "Handgun" stands as a testament to Made of Bones' innovative approach to music, embodying their diverse influences and the collaborative synergy that drives their creative process. Each track offers a fresh perspective, blending rock, experimental, and noise elements to deliver a captivating and immersive listening experience. Portugalski kwartet złożony z muzyków o całkiem świeżych dla nas personaliach, to intrygująca zabawa w fussion-jazz z udanymi plamami rocka i post-ambientu, smakowicie wiedziona brzmieniem kwaśnego instrumentu klawiszowego zwanego waldorf. Nagranie, składające się z jednej, trwającej cztery dziesiątki minut improwizacji, podzielonej na dziesięć odcinków, pełne jest dramaturgicznych subtelności, a prowadzone w dalece nieśpiesznym, definitywnie portugalskim tempie.
Otwarcie albumu trwa ledwie trzy minuty, a szyte jest ostrym, kolektywnym ściegiem z odpowiednią dawką emocji. Potem artyści zwalniają i zaczynają snuć kwaśną, podszytą dubowym echem opowieść. Okazjonalnie łapią dynamikę, wpadają w zmyślny rytm, sycą improwizację zrównoważoną porcją hałasu. Świetnie czują się w leniwych, choć nerwowych sekwencjach short-cuts (choćby w części czwartej), udanie kreują bardziej melodyjne, jazzowe wątki (m-base’owa gitara w części piątej). W szóstej opowieści najpierw bawią się w małą radiotelegrafię, potem szyją meta balladową narrację, która płynie dość melodyjnym strumieniem. Ciekawie dzieje się części siódmej, która zaczyna się mroku, a klejona jest z drobnych fraz, także sampli. Z czasem opowieść łapie jazz-rockowy drive i zdaje się być jednym z najlepszych momentów płyty. Ostatnie trzy odcinki powracają do leniwego tempa, kreują narrację nadymając dźwięki, a nie szukając dynamiki. Gitara frazuje tu na jazzowo, klawisze płyną strugą ambientu. W końcowej narracji gitarze bliżej jest do estetyki rocka, a waldorfowi do post-psychodelii. Album kończy efektowne spiętrzenie, niepozbawione znamion hałasu.
