Pathfinder is the new album from producer Hanyo van Oosterom, alias The Flying Dutchman, in association with Ciska Ruitenberg and Edwin de Herder of the indie rock group Spot.

This is the third release on the City Groovez label, which was set up by Van Oosterom in collaboration with Essential Dancemusic.

The previous album, Trip To The Core, was well received internationally, and is currently in distribution in the Benelux countries and exported to Germany, Switzerland and Scandanavia.

Co-operation with labels in England, France and Canada, amongst other places, is being planned for the Autumn of 2001.

AMBIENT, TRIPHOP

The Flying Dutchman's music is a meld of styles and has been compared in the press with the ambient music of Brian Eno and Bill Laswell, and the triphop of Tricky, Portishead and Massive Attack.

The manipulated beats, completed by live drums and experimental percussion, form the main theme, together with booming basses and alienating samples.

In particular, the ambient treatments show Van Oosterom's real roots as a producer. The harmonic guitars of Edwin de Herder and Ciska Ruitenberg's expressive vocals fit in effortlessly. The musical three piece, and opening track One Foot, is a good example of this.

Pathfinder is an adventurous soundtrack, based on the idea of its namesake exploring the surface of Planet Mars.

Jazzująco-ambientalne ballady. Wyrastają z doświadczeń lat 80. ale zostały podane w nowobrzmieniowym sosie. Zmutowana elektronicznie trąbka, akustyczna gitara, kobiece wokale, majestatyczne impresje fortepianu – wszystko to osnute samplami o etnicznym kolorycie i wpuszczone w z lekka psychodeliczne przestrzenie nowej elektroniki o ambientowym oddechu. Ów etniczny żywioł określa rytmiczną warstwę piosenek. Zdaje się to wyrastać z estetyki a la David Sylvian, szczególnie z okresu jego współpracy z Hasselem. Mniej oniryczne, a bardziej etno-psychodeliczne. Barwnie i klimatycznie.
