Over the past six decades, Amina Claudine Myers’ music has ranged far over from the spirituals, hymns and popular gospel groups she heard and emulated during her childhood, in Baptist and Methodist churches across Arkansas and Texas. Yet those early influences run deeply through her extensive and varied oeuvre, emerging steeped in experience in this very personal album, Solace of the Mind.
Amina’s meditative, reflective, evocative program here is without glitz or artifice. She relies on fine touch, inner calm and pure feeling to soothe the soul — hers and ours — using pure pianistic melody as in ‘African Blues’, exploratory lines in ‘Sensuous’ and ‘Twilight,’ gradual lyricism in ‘Voices’ and direct message on ‘Ode to My Ancestors’. While respectful of jazz figures such as Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda and Mary Lou Williams whose lives and art… Encompassed profound religiosity, Myers offers in Solace respites from strife without rhetoric or faith professed in anything but sound itself. She has the patience and discernment to let her chords resound, their overtones linger. Her rhythm is internal, time bearing drama even when open or broken, as on ‘Beneath the Sun’.
