The double bass is an often underappreciated instrument in jazz – since Duke Ellington's big band, it has been credited with providing the rhythmic foundation for the frenetic performances of masters of trumpet, drums, and piano. It might seem that a solo album would be an opportunity for Mazolewski to boast virtuosoly. However, the Pink Freud leader has chosen a different approach – presenting the double bass as a melodic instrument, with extraordinary care, if not tenderness, revealing the richness and depth of its sound.

"Solo" is a surprising album. Despite its subtle arrangements (harp, flute, and percussion, delicate electronics, whispers), the album captivates from the very first notes. Mazolewski's musical narrative captivates and fascinates, slowly revealing sonic and compositional details. The musician opens up a space for concentration and reflection without slipping into new-age cliché.
