Formed in 1984, Fields of the Nephilim is the brainchild of vocalist and frontman Carl McCoy. The band has had a profound influence, particularly in the world of gothic music, but also across various genres of metal and electronica. Their legacy endures to this day. Echoes of their work can be heard in bands such as Swans, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Wolves in the Throne Room, Behemoth, and many others.

The band's unique sound, an apocalyptic fusion of the Victorian underground and Sergio Leone's spaghetti western, perfectly complemented their visual appearance (wide-brimmed hats, long coats, and cowboy boots, usually black and covered in white flour as a substitute for dust) and set them apart from other bands.

Dawnrazor is the band's debut album, originally released in 1987. It has been remastered, released on CD, and pressed on white vinyl, and expanded to a double LP to improve the sound quality. Upon its release, several different versions of the album were released, with different track listings depending on the country. This edition is the definitive version—for the first time on vinyl, it features all 14 tracks together, complete, and complete, for the first time since the five-disc CD-only release.

The album's opening track features a sample of Ennio Morricone's "Man with the Harmonica" theme from Sergio Leone's 1968 western Once Upon a Time in the West.

"Preacher Man" is an epic track that is often cited as one of the greatest gothic songs of all time.
