It's a sound, not a song. At least at first. Then Ronald Lippok and Bernd Jestram, sitting in their Berlin studio, turn knobs, press buttons, move sliders. Until they find "that" sound, until "that" sound finds them. Rhythm, melody, murmur, and then they slowly write an entire song. On "Spider Smile", these two artists deeply rooted in the history and present of Berlin's musical underground have found, similarly to their previous album "The Needle Was Travelling", surprisingly decidedly pop songs. Although these songs are full of references and sometimes even quotes, each listener will find their own personal stories and associations in them. As Ronald himself says, even the lyrics of their songs are rather a kind of collages, oriented to the open minds of listeners.
Listening to this album, one may get the impression that its leading motif is America, its poetry, ideas about it and associations.
Ronald and Bernd's favorite instrument is still their studio, the ability to freely transform and modulate sounds, phrases, melodies. But analog instruments, recorded traditionally by microphone, also appear on "Spider Smile". For example, the mouth harmonica, thanks to which the song "Witchpark" vibrates with incredible blues, and then passes into dark dub landscapes: forests in swamps and alligators.
The album also includes an amazing cover of one of Tarwater's favorite bands from the 80s, "sweethome under white clouds" by Virgin Prunes.
"Spider Smile" is, as the title says, an album that is both dark and makes you smile. It has vibrations and a message that send shivers down your spine and at the same time evokes calm, deep relaxation. A paradox that seems unreal, but in the case of Tarwater, nothing is impossible.

To brzmienie, nie piosenka. Przynajmniej na początku. Wtedy Ronald Lippok i Bernd Jestram siedząc w swoim berlińskim studio kręcą gałkami, naciskają przyciski, przesuwają suwaki. Aż znajdą "to" brzmienie, aż "to" brzmienie ich znajdzie. Rytm, melodia, szmer, a po tym powoli piszą całą piosenkę. Ulubionym instrumentem Ronalda i Bernda jest nadal ich studio, możliwość dowolnego przekształcania i modulowania dźwięków, fraz, melodii. Ale na "Spider Smile" pojawiają się także instrumenty analogowe, nagrywane tradycyjnie przez mikrofon. Na przykład ustna harmonijka, dzięki której utwór "Witchpark" wibruje niesamowitym bluesem, by potem przejść w mroczne dubowe pejzaże: lasy na bagnach i aligatory.
Na płycie znalazł się także niesamowity cover jednej z ulubionych grup muzyków Tarwater z lat 80-tych "sweethome under white clouds" autorstwa Virgin Prunes.
"Spider Smile" to, jak sam tytuł mówi, płyta zarówno mroczna jak i powodująca uśmiech. Ma w sobie drgania i przesłanie powodujące ciarki na plecach a jednocześnie wywołujące spokojne, głębokie odprężenie. Paradoks, który wydaje się nierealny, jednak w przypadku Tarwater chyba nic nie jest niemożliwe.
