Editor's info:
”Commuter Anthems” is the second album from Eivind Opsvik and Aaron Jennings. Opsvik is from Oslo, Norway, but has lived in New York since 1998 where he´s playing bass in several cutting edge groups. Guitarist Aaron Jennings is from Tulsa, Oklahoma, but moved to New York after college. As with many of our releases ”Commuter Anthems” is difficult to categorize. Both players come from a jazz background, but that´s only a small part of the picture. Folk and country influences provide the album with a rural, almost relaxed feeling as guitars, double bass, drums, concertina, pump organ, lap steel, banjo, and various recording techniques and software manipulations creates a filmatic musical story being played by a dreamy experimental pop orchestra.

This is the second album recorded by New York-based Ospvik & Jennings (the multi-instrumentalists’ first for Rune Grammofon), and is something of a departure from their earlier, more obviously electronic work. This time around the duo have aimed for a far more layered, even orchestral, album of instrumental pop music. The glockenspiel and lapsteel of tracks like ‘Silverlake’ immediately bring to mind the sound of experimental Swedish group, Tape, yet there’s something more openly traditional about this material, which unashamedly takes in country influences along the way. A sprightly tunefulness runs through the entire record, and that even extends to the more processed-sounding, abstract works here like the celeste-mangling ‘Lorinda Sea’ or the gorgeous, string-sampling ‘Ways’. While both players come from a jazz background, Commuter Anthems is a far more playful, occasionally cinematic affair that’s entirely in keeping with Rune Grammofon’s unique ear for unclassifiable music. Recommended.
