Brilliant Corners was Thelonious Monk's third album for the Riverside label, and his first LP for the label dedicated predominantly to his own original compositions (his first two Riverside albums were devoted to well known jazz standards and Duke Ellington compositions). The album presents Monk's first studio recording of the intricate "Brilliant Corners", which according to producer Orrin Keepnews was the result of something like 26 takes! The first versions of "Ba-lue Bolivar Ba-lues-are" and "Pannonica" also appear here. By this time, "Bemsha Swing" had become a classic Monk composition (he had recorded it in 1952 in a trio format and in 1954 in a quintet with Miles Davis and Milt Jackson). Although this is Monk's first studio version of "I Surrender Dear" (he would revisit the tune in his 1964 solo piano sessions), an early unissued version exists featuring Monk with trumpeter Hot Lips Page recorded live at Minton's Playhouse by Jerry Newman in 1941. The Brilliant Corners date also marks Monk's third session with Sonny Rollins.
