PASBORG'S ODESSA X-TRA LARGE LIVE is drummer Stefan Pasborg's third release with his "Odessa project", although the constantly touring, widely travelled drummer has yet to visit the Ukrainian harbor city by the Black Sea. He stubbornly tries to keep his fantasies alive of the city as a fascinating melting pot of cultures, home to a diverse population of Russians, Ukrainians, Jews, Rumanians, Greeks, Bulgarians, Albanians, Armenians, Italians, Frenchmen, Germans, hustlers, pirates and smugglers – truly a cosmopolitan mixture. Pasborg envisions choirs, Russian military bands, parade bands and brass bands, Middle Eastern drums, traditional jazz, free improvisations, classical, rock, funk and much more – all seamlessly blending together. Naturally no existing band played the music, Pasborg heard in his head, so he assembled a group to fit the sound.
This time, the charismatic 38-year old musician has merged two of the bands with whom he has worked most intensively over the recent years: Odessa 5 and Ibrahim Electric. The result is a new version of Odessa X-tra Large, and the music is a natural continuation of the music on the two Stunt releases ODESSA FIVE from 2008 and ODESSA X-TRA LARGE from 2010.
It is not surprising that Pasborg's Odessa is a popular live act – the remarkable band in its various formats has toured Denmark and abroad since 2006 – because once you've experienced this wild group on stage, you will most probably have become a devoted fan. A tumultuous and wonderful encounter, the energetic, unimpressed and anarchistic interpretations of known and unknown material are not your everyday listening. All this is crammed into ODESSA X-TRA LARGE LIVE, recorded at one concert at Copenhagen Jazz House and one at The Village studio in front an invited audience. Once again we can enjoy a wild, multi-ethnic vibe filtered through Pasborg's twisted brain. His dynamic drumming is the natural center in the joy.......

"PASBORG'S ODESSA X-TRA LARGE LIVE" to tak naprawdę trzecia wersja projektu duńskiego perkusisty Stefana Pasborga, nagrana tym razem w mocno odmienionym składzie. Chociaż Pasborg wiele czasu spędza w trasie, znajduje jeszcze czas by odwiedzić portowe miasto nad Morzem Czarnym. Uparcie próbuje przy tym zachować w muzyce swojego zespołu fascynujący klimat Odessy, uchwycić kotłujący się nim tygiel kultur - był to wszak dom dla wielu populacji: Rosjan, Ukraińców, Żydów, Rumunów, Greków, Bułgarów, Albańczyków, Ormian, Włochów, Francuzów, Niemców, dla piratów i przemytników. Prawdziwie kosmopolityczna mieszanina. Tak też próbował odzwierciedlić Duńczyk muzykę, którą słyszał w głowie - czerpiąc z muzyki rosyjskich chórów i orkiestr dętych, perkusyjnych instrumentów Bliskiego Wschodu, jazzu tradycyjnego, wolnej improwizacji, muzyki żydowskiej jak i klasycznej, rocka, funku i wielu innych gatunków oraz tradycji.

Istniejący wcześniej zespół nie mógł podołać takiemu zadaniu - Duńczyk powołał więc nowy, łącząc ze sobą Odessa 5 oraz trio Ibrahim Electric. Rezultatem jest nowa grupa Odessa X-tra Large, a muzyka jest naturalną kontynuacją dwóch pierwszych płyt - Odessa 5 z 2008 roku i Odessa X-tra Large z 2010.

Pasborg's Odessa to przede wszystkim zespół koncertowy - od 2006 koncertował Danii i za granicą - bo kto raz zobaczył tę pulsującą dziką energią grupę na żywo - zostanie jej oddanym fanem. Taka jest też ostatnia płyta zespołu będąca właśnie zapisem koncertu w Copenhagen Jazz House. Tym razem jednak często sięgają oni do jazzowych standardów - kompozycji Charlesa Mingus i Ornette'a Colemana, The Lounge Lizards i Alberta Aylera, jak i rockowych coverów - Jacka White'a czy Led Zeppelin. We wszystkich tych kawałkach po raz kolejny możemy podziwiać dziką furię i wieloetniczny klimat, przefiltrowaną przez zakręconą wrażliwość Stefana Pasborga. Dynamiczne i znakomite granie, niemające sobie równych na europejskiej scenie jazzowej.
