Po bardzo udanym debiucie przyszedł na nie mniej udaną kontynuację, „Victim of Love” to druga płyta Charles'a Bradley'a, który robi zasłużoną acz mocno spóźnioną karierę na świecie. Charles Bradley wciąż jawi się na scenie retro soulu jako istny fenomen.

Produkcją albumu zajął się Thomas Brenneck, który wyjawił, iż krążek będzie znacznie różnił się od poprzedniego, jak mówi: będzie psychodeliczna, z motywami brudnych gitar.

Charles Bradley na autorską studyjną płytę czekał długo: pierwszą („No Time For Dreaming”) wydał w 2011 roku, w wieku 63 lat. Wcześniej parał się rozmaitymi pracami, kompletnie nie związanymi z muzyką, od czasu do czasu występował jedynie jako „impersonator” Jamesa Browna. Jak podają biografie, to właśnie młodzieńcze uwielbienie dla funkującej sex-maszyny uczyniło z Bradleya aktywnego muzyka i wokalistę. Charles śpiewa z ekshibicjonizmem godnym Ojca funku, korzysta też z maniery i technik tegoż – szczególnie z sytuujących się na granicy bezdźwięku krzyków. Dlatego nie zdziwiłbym się, gdyby Bradley okazał się zaginionym bratankiem Browna. Ale też kuzynem wielkiego shoutera, Wilsona Picketta.

Album jest hymnem ku czci złotych lat funku i soulu - to zarazem jego największa zaleta i wada. Poza oczywistościami warto wyłowić hendrixowski groove circa „Band of Gypsys” („You Put A Flame On Me” i bas w 2:33). Gdyby „Confusion” podpisać nazwiskiem Jamesa Browna, nikt by się nie zorientował. Sielankowe struktury „Crying in the Chapel” prowadzą do blue-eyed soulowej estetyki. Willie Hutch znalazłby tu materiał na kilka soundtracków do filmów blaxploitation. I tak dalej, i tak dalej, a odwołania w większości można uznać za udane.

Dlatego też trudno wskazać na płycie słaby utwór. Wiele tu sprawnego muzykowania i udanych motywów, a charyzma Bradleya kruszy mury. Każda piosenka jest .......
