The bass is an intermediary. At once rhythmic, textural, melodic and harmonic. It can keep the band together or signal a dissipation. Let’s face it: nothing makes more sense than to have the double bassist as bandleader. What about being the bassist also the composer of the band? Well, that’s another story. The music of Jason Roebke is raw and grounded. The journey is, in itself, the destination. A kind of musique vérité, particular to the ethos of his native Chicago, embracing crackly amplifiers and slamming doors at the legendary Chicago “Hungry Brain” club. It’s with no surprise that the bass playing in “Every Sunday” is put to the service of this trio with Matthew Schneider and Marcus Evans, instead of being the main voice. Recalling the work of is composition teacher, and the jazz luminary for whom he worked as a music copyist, Roscoe Mitchell, the trio waits for just the right moment to tumble, pause or glide, like a jazz melted into the cracks of free improvisation. Roebke weaves his bass in and out of the spotlight, always at the service of the music. In that particular, there’s no great difference between the Roebke leader and the Roebke sideman in groups like Jeb Bishop Trio, Jason Adasiewicz Rolldown, Jason Stein’s Locksmith Isidore or Mike Reed’s People, Places and Things. Guitarist Matthew Schneider deconstructs beautiful melodies with his guitar until they get totally abstract and the drummer, Marcus Evans, moves from the “miss-one-beat” swing of the post-bop era to rather puzzling textures.

"Najnowszy, znakomity album sygnowany przez Jasona Roebke, to przykład takiego nieco wychłodzonego emocjonalnie free-jazzu, który znakomicie sprawdza się w nieśpiesznych i w pełni demokratycznych składach - nie ma tu mowy o jakimkolwiek podziale na instrument solowy i sekcję rytmiczną. I dotyczy to wszelkich poziomów realizacyjnych tego projektu - tak samo jest bowiem również w przypadku brzmienia tego albumu. Zaczyna się on cudownym, ponad dwudziestotrzyminutowym utworem tytułowym, który jest tego najlepszym przykładem. Rozpoczyna się on od solówki lidera i kontrabasisty, a poszczególni muzycy dołączają do grania tak, by w pierwszej chwili trudno było ich dostrzec. Dopiero gdy dźwięk się zagęszcza dochodzi do słuchaczy, że słyszymy nie jeden instrument, ale trzy. I tak jest bodaj cały czas - żaden z instrumentów nie wysuwała się tutaj na plan pierwszy, ale wszystkie trzy są na tym samym poziomie głośności i równie demokratycznie umieszczone w dźwiękowym planie. Co prawda wymusza to na słuchaczach natężoną uwagę, ale emocje i muzyka rekompensują to napięcie świadomości z nawiązką.

Muzyka tutaj rozwija się nieśpiesznie, chociaż brak pełnych gwałtownych, skrajnie energetycznych solówek, nie oznacza wcale ograniczenia emocji i energii. To, że są one kontrolowane to jedno, ale są też wyczuwalne od pierwszych dźwięków. Gdy posłuchać uważnie jak kształtowany jest tu dźwięk, jaka zawarta jest tu energia (wyczuwalna choćby w szarpnięciach strun instrumentów), od razu widać jak napięta jest tutaj być świadomość i uwaga każdego z instrumentalistów.

Równocześnie z tego tria trudno jest kogoś wyróżnić - to przede wszystkim kolektyw, związany dźwiękową ideą, który potrafi zamierzenia Robkego w pełni zrealizować, a przy tym zaskakuje i przewartościowuje utarte schematy umysłowe słuchaczy. Świetna płyta z prawdziwą perełką w postaci tytułowej kompozycji! Bardzo, bardzo polecam!"
