One is the new, highly energetic and unifying studio album from Tim Garland. Working with his regular collaborators Jason Rebello, Asaf Sirkis and Ant Law, the sax maestro has dug back into his past and re-examined his early interest in jazz-rock styles.

With One Tim explores many of the influences that have guided him from the beginning, such as jazz-rock (his Canterbury roots); saxophone players from both sides of the Atlantic; the Celtic guitar music from long running project Lammas; the Latin and Spanish inflections that are so deeply a part of Chick Corea’s music; and a variety of rhythmic patterns learned from drum maestros Bill Bruford and Asaf Sirkis.

Asaf taught Tim the ten beat, Middle Eastern Sama’i. On ‘Sama’i For Peace’, Hossam Ramzy adds Egyptian percussion. He’s also on ‘Colours Of Night’, and ‘Foretold’ where the groove he sets up on the karkabu (giant metallic finger cymbals) and doholla (deep darbouka drum) is mesmeric.

One is a studio album and Tim’s taken the opportunity to add occasional keyboard colours with Asaf layering Udu and Darbouka, and vocals, over his own drumming. One theme features six layered.......

Po obsypanej nagrodami płycie Chicka Corea "The Vigil", na której wystąpił Tim Garland, przyszedł czas na autorski album tego znakomitego saksofonisty i klarnecisty.
"One", bo taki ma tytuł płyta Garlanda, nagrana została w wybornym towarzystwie, Jason Rebello na klawiszach, za perkusją Asaf Sirkis i na gitarze Ant Law. Gościnnie na płycie pojawiają się Hossam Ramzy, grający na egipskiej tabli, darbuce i występującej w kulturze Gnawa - karkabu. Drugim gościem specjalnym jest wokalistka Dionne Bennett, śpiewająca w jednym utworze "Pity The Poor Arms Dealer".

Wypełniające płytę, autorskie kompozycje Garlanda maję tę charakterystyczną dla jego dorobku kompozytorskiego lekkość i śpiewność. Z wielką dojrzałością prowadzi
Brzmienie saksofonu sopranowego i tenorowego lidera jest ciepłe i nasycone a melodyjne tematy płynnie przechodzą w wyważone i wciągające improwizacje. Trudno powiedzieć, że Tim Garland z zespołem przekracza jakieś jazzowe granice, jego sztuka od lat balansuje na krawędzi – estetyki oraz stylistyki. Tak jest i tym razem, mamy tu odwołania do początków kariery Galanda z czasów jego przynależności do sceny Canterbury, mamy emanujące sugestywnym, mrocznym, pełnym napięcia nastrojem utwory. Mamy w końcu pełne subtelnych improwizacji wyborne ballady.

Ci artyści znakomicie znają topografię współczesnego jazzu i robią z tej wiedzy niebagatelny użytek. A ich osobisty stosunek do procesu tworzenia, wynikający z ich przeżyć, z dotknięcia muzyki czy długoletniego doświadczenia daje to coś, czego brakuje wielu współczesnym nagraniom.

"One" kwartetu Tima Garlanda to czysta przyjemność.
