The association between Spanish (living in France and being a part of its jazz scene) guitarist Santiago Quintans and French saxophonist Matthieu Donarier is the consequence of a “carte blanche” given to the first one in order to form a couple of duos. First, Quintans had double bassist Paul Rogers as partner and the results were more than positive. Then, came Donarier and something particularly special happened. Quintans found a musical soulmate. Like him, Donarier has as a principle not to exclude anything from music, be it abstract textures or ear-tintilating melodies, microtonal explorations or the good old counterpoint, linear phrasings or polirhythmic constructions. For them, the invitation to “free the jazz” is literal: they use everything at their disposal, with no preconceptions regarding any convention and the usual divisions between what’s considered “mainstream” or “avant-garde”. “Sun Dome” is true open jazz played with a sculptor approach, and this means that in every moment we hear the sounds being modeled, as if they were clay, wood or stone. This has some welcomed implications: the act of listening to the other comes like a gesture, and both these musicians not only play their instruments as they play the space around them. The result is pure magic.

Hiszpański gitarzysta Santiago Quintans (mieszkający jednak we Francji i będący ważną postacią tamtejszej sceny jazzowej) oraz francuski saksofonista Matthieu Donarier spotkali się na dosyć przypadkowej sesji w studiu, i postanowili, ot tak, nagrać kilka duetów. Bez wielkich planów i jakichkolwiek zobowiązań. Sesja była przypadkowa i pierwotnie planowana zupełnie z kim innym ( z basistą Paulem Rogersem), ale potem przyszedł Donarier i muzyka potoczyła się w zupełnie inną stronę. Quintans znalazł bowiem właśnie w saksofoniście bratnią muzyczną duszę, trochę tak jakby znalazł drugą połowę siebie.

Obaj są bardzo do siebie podobni - nie wykluczają z muzyki właściwie niczego. Liryczne melodie są w ich dokonaniach współobecne z free improv'owymi poszukiwaniami, obaj mają zamiłowanie tak do abstrakcyjnych tekstur, mikrotonowych poszukiwań, jak i niemal wprost w madrigalistów elżbietańskiej Anglii zaczerpniętych barokowych kontrapunktów; do prostoty linearnych frazesów, jak i rozbudowanych polirytmicznych konstrukcji. Obaj zaproszenie do grana free jazzu rozumieją właściwie dosłownie - bez uprzedzeń do jakichkolwiek konwencji i podziałów między tym, co uważane jest za jazz głównego nurtu, i tym, co słuchacze i krytycy postrzegają jako awangardę. Dźwięki przez nich wydobywane są przy tym tak naturalnie zakorzenione w ciszy i przestrzeni, jakby były one także immanentną częścią ich muzycznego tworzywa. Efektem jest czysta magia, którą tylko przez błahy przypadek udało się zarejestrować na pięknym albumie "Sun Dome".
