Arve Henriksen is a major representative of a golden generation of Norwegian jazz musicians. This is his ninth solo album (eight on Rune Grammofon and one on ECM), he has also released a dozen albums as a founder member of Supersilent and appears on well over a hundred records by artists like David Sylvian, Jon Balke, Trygve Seim, Imogen Heap, Arild Andersen and many more. With "Towards Language" trumpeter Arve Henriksen is back with his trusted long time musical partners Jan Bang and Erik Honoré. Arve first collaborated with the pair on the much loved and highly praised "Chiaroscuro" (2004), Arve´s second album, and later on "Cartography" (ECM 2008) and "Places Of Worship" (2013). Also an important part of the line-up is Eivind Aarset, the ECM associated guitarist extraordinaire.

Following hot on the heels of Rimur (ECM, 2017), Towards Language is Arve Henriksen's second album of 2017 and brings his tally of releases to ten in the past five years. One of the more remarkable things about Henriksen is that even though the quantity of releases increases, their quality remains as high as ever. All of the hallmarks that make his music distinctive are still in place, as good as ever—the haunting melodies, soaring falsetto vocals and exquisitely beautiful trumpet. His sound is as individual as a fingerprint, the true mark of a great player.

Studio-recorded over two days in August 2016, Towards Language consists of nine tracks, of which the longest runs for just seven-and-a-half minutes. Such concentrated, economical music has typified Henriksen's output on such classic albums as Places of Worship (Rune Grammofon, 2013) and Chiaroscuro (Rune Grammofon, 2004). Monumentalne lodowce, zamglone doliny i hektolitry pijackich łez, niewylanych ze względu na twardą, antyalkoholową politykę: Towards Language to przykład tak zwanej "muzyki z duszą". Gdzieś na przecięciu jazzu i ambientu, Arve Henriksen nagrał skąpaną w noirowych kontrastach odę do norweskiej melancholii. Członek Supersilent rozdzielił tu swoją wrażliwość po równo między posępne motywy ukochanego instrumentu i wzniosłe, a jednocześnie wiejące zimną pustką pejzaże wypełniające tło. Cierpliwie konstruowane narracje w stylu "Groundswell" czy "Hibernal" wprowadzają w repetycyjny trans i wywołują stan nawet nie tyle zachwytu, co niemego, otępiałego szacunku – uczucia znajomego zapewne dla każdego, kto choć raz postawił stopę na słynnej Trolltundze, wchłaniając pierwotną niesamowitość otaczających widoków. To dzikie, statyczne piękno, w którym zdecydowanie warto się na chwilę zatracić.

Przywołując zdanie pewnego zapomnianego już klasyka, mógłbym powiedzieć, że język wyznacza naszą perspektywę na świat, czy tego chcemy, czy się przed tym bronimy. Oczywiście nasze poznanie uwikłane jest również w perspektywiczność, zależne jest nie tylko od języka, ale i od miejsca, z którego spoglądamy na otaczającą nas rzeczywistość. Język muzyki zdaje się być w tym przypadku czymś na kształt języka uniwersalnego. W jego charakter wpisana jest zasada transgresji - język muzyki bez trudu potrafi przekraczać wszelkie ograniczenia, zarówno miejsca, jak i czasu.

Kto wie, być może właśnie tego typu myślenie o języku towarzyszyło Arve Henriksenowi, kiedy pracował nad swoją najnowszą płytą - "Towards Language". Norweski trębacz i kompozytor nie próżnował w ostatnich miesiącach. W marcu tego roku ukazał się album Trio Mediaeval&Arve Henriksen - "Rimur", który zawierał zapis siedemnastu dawnych pieśni ludowych pochodzących z różnych rejo.......
